Look's like a good solid body and frame for a 97.

countryboy
02-04-2009, 08:15 AM
Oh yeah.... I'll be stripping this thing completely. Once i get the engine/tranny/TC, etc.. off, I am going to vapour barrier a room around the frame and start sandblasting it. Once done, i am sealing it up with POR15. Frame is rock solid and the body, other than perforations behind the passenger seat near the roll cage mount, is solid as well.

With sandblasting...... Would a siphon system suffice? There's about a $100 price difference between a siphon and pressure sand blaster.

bigboydale
02-04-2009, 08:35 AM
I'm sure a siphon one should work that's what is in a sandblast cabinet but it will be slow going.

Hey TJ-PitBull, Yes I did take most of what he had for sale, including the corners and rails. I'll be keeping them :) If that changes, I'll let you know.

Ricktj, I would have to look. I might have a few overall shots, but i don't i did. I actually bought the TJ, drove it home, started dissassembling and within about 2 weeks i had them gone and replaced with the flat fenders

Right now it's a toss up. I am either going green like the jeep on the cover of the recent JP magazine or this color:

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2009/03/225.jpg

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2009/03/226.jpg

Still up in the air.....

And yeah Chevy.. I will never fawking sandblast again. What a messy job. In the end i went through about 29 bags of sand. @ around $8/bag, it would have been almost cheaper to just ship the parts off for blasting. I just had no way to do this and had to resort to blasting myself.....

The filter made a good shield to keep the paint off the oil filter area :bigok:

She'll get changed before the maiden start up

yeah dude, i keep trying to give my sandblast stuff away so i am never tempted to do it again. I'm still picking it out of my crack, that shit gets everywhere!!

I can get you the paint code for that Egyptian leaf sprung jk thing. It is pretty close to the original colour of mine. I am slowly but surly going rattle can though.

Do you have any engine mods planned while its out like that? I'm thinking intake and header port the head. If you can, you should install a 2002+ intake as well to help HP.
You could replace the head gasket while you had the head off as well. One less thing to potentially fail on you.

countryboy
03-17-2009, 10:10 PM
I was and still might however it all depends on funds. I have already replaced all the gaskets

I WOULD LIKE to throw headers on.
Intakes, i have always felt they are too overpriced.
I knew of the 4.0 TB, never heard of the 2002 Intake??

I don't want to spend too much coin on something that deep down inside, i hope blows up quickly so that i can replace with a Small block :)

were you able to find out the actual colour code for the "sarge" jeep?

ricktj
03-17-2009, 11:19 PM
Oh, I'm sorry man. I didn't think to count your ports. The 02+ intake was a 4.0L thing only. They changed the intake manifold to a more rounded (vs. the straight shot 90* thing they had going on in 01- 4.0L models.) It was rumored to increase efficiency, but no dice on the 2.5.

Well... Today was a good day. I finally was ready and able to reconnect the drivetrain to the frame and button everything up. I had one heck of a time with the tranny to the engine. Fawk, i just couldn't get it to line up (Guess it does make a difference to have a tranny stand!!!). Then a note to all...... MAKE SURE you have the bottom splash plate correctly in place BEFORE you torque down the bolts securing the tranny to the engine. I learnt the hard way that this is required...

In any event, some photos of the results so far. Frame is completeley POR'ed, SYE is in place, everythings degreased sanded and/or repainted, all new gaskets and everythings connected back up. I had to grind off the rivnuts for the skid plate and insert new ones as the existings all spun loose. I then tack welded them in place so it should hold nicely. Next steps are to get the axles finished, then hook up the suspension and then get the wheels on!!

Had some good progress today. Got all the suspension in place and was able to hook up the pneu's. Very strange situation... My RE front track bar's frame side mount would not fit to the track bar mount on the frame. The bolt was just too big. I had to drill it out to 5/8" for it to fit. Strange that RE would do this as it is nowhere in the manuals.... In any event, i ended up fawking up the threads on the bolt and the nut. Was able to sawzall the bad threads but could not locate a 5/8" nut fine thread in my area so... Off to Ottawa Fasteners tomorrow after work.

Next will be bending all the brake lines and tighten everything up.

Question i have.....

So, the color i am going with is

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2009/06/3.png

http://www.krylon.com/products/camouflage_paint_with_fusion_technology/

However i want to shoot everything with a paint gun. Anyone know what my options are for getting this in a gallon paint can? From a painter's perspective, how do you think this will fare with scratches, etc.... I really want something that will be hard and not scratch that easily. Keep in mind, this is going to be a completely "Drab" jeep so, no clear coats...... Are there other options for me to take, if i have this as my color selection, whereby i can have this mixed elsewhere with a more "appropriate" paint that will resist scraches, etc.....? I am looking for something very easy to apply and am trying to avoid mixing parts of this and parts of that if at all possible. I intend to spray everything first with a standard red rust primer first. With the floors, i am actually going to line it with herculiner first and then spray with paint..

Look forward to comments, suggestions.

what type of welder did you use to weld the floor patches?

SHREK

you can get it mixed at any place that sells automotive paint.

2 quarts of OD green + 2 large timmies cups of flattening agent was a good mix.

Rattle cans work great, never had a problem with it running. Plus it makes for an easy repair when you dent and scratch it.

However i want to shoot everything with a paint gun. Anyone know what my options are for getting this in a gallon paint can?

I had a body shop in London put the leftover paint from a 5gal can into an aerosol spray for touchups, I would assume they can go the other way too? Might be expensive, but it would save you a lot of time.

Best bet would be to visit an automotive paint shop and see what they can do for you, you might be able to pick that colour right out of the books they have. Can you colour-match the paint at Rona or something and take the colour code to an auto paint shop for them to make up?

Great project by the way, looks great!

Thats the exact paint I just did my xj with, No pics yet I'm waiting for the bedliner to be finished on the bottom of the doors etc. But I'm thrilled with it. Took me 13 cans do do the whole deal, (no roof-bedliner) and I was thrilled with it. So easy to touch up, couldn't be easier. I roughed up the paint with a 3M pad and so far so good, very hard to get runs with this paint, it dries so fast. I was recoating in 10 min max! Approx 4 coats per panel. Go for it. Love the thread.

My biggest concern is how will it will stand up to scratches.... I did the grille and i must admit i was very pleased with the color and outcome...

Fawk, i have to decide soon..!!!! Body is ALMOST ready. I'll have the whole day to work on it. Should be ready to go. Gotta finish dry-fitting the rear tube flares, cut out the LED tails, do some last minute sanding on the sides, acetone clean the inside, lay the herculiner and then it will be ready for paint!!

Should have lots of pics tomorrow eve..

Thanks for the info.

Had some good progress over the past week...

Warn Gas Tank Skid Plate in and tank back in place
Front and rear bumpers prepped, POR'd, painted and installed
Front PS skid plate installed
Sway bars installed.
Tub prepped and primered
Tub was then lined inside with Herculiner
Tub was then painted
GenRight flares POR'd, prepped and painted
Tub was then installed (Added a 1" body lift)
Added a set of Poison Spyder Ricochet Side Rails
Added a set of Poison Spyder Rear corner guards
Installed the rear flares
Installed the front grill (Cut out and installed a set of 2" LED signal lights)
Installed the 2" rear LED lights (These are real slick from Genright)

I decided to paint the TJ myself with rattle cans. I have a feeling it won't be as hard as i was hoping but we'll see. Worst that can happen is i pull it all off next year and get it coated with a better paint. So far i am in about 19 cans of the Krylon Cammo paint. I still have the hood to do, the front flat fenders and the 1/2 and full doors.

LOTS left to do!!! However this week off really gave it a good boost!

That jeep is just fawsome!! I am nutso about the Krylon OD. They have the perfect blend IMO out of all the shades.

And you'll be really happy with the durability. It can be beat up pretty good - but just like any paint, it'll scratch with enough force. But the krylon stuff puts up with a lot. I paint a lot of stuff with the krylon OD and I always have a can or 2 on standby.

Beauty about it is, if you do scratch it up, just spray paint it on top of damaged surface and she'll blend awesomely. You won't even remember where the damaged surface was.

I love practicality, and the krylon OD is on top my list for must haves for practicality.

Keep taking pics!

Finished the dash, and the interior, got the 2nd coat on the hood and started putting the components back on (Added a few additional pieces to the hood!!! :beerchug:). I ended up painting all the interior dash pieces to match the overall color of the Jeep (Yeah, that's right!!! More OD green and black!!)

Well..... TJ is just about there.... Body is now all done and on.

Left to do:

Once I get the NOVAK TC kit, install that
Get all my LED's wired in to the harness
Brakes bled and set up
Get the measurements and order the Driveshaft
Send the jeep off to get the custom cage built and perhaps a stinger
The ONLY problem is that it's not turning over :bigok:. I expected as much. I know i have a few grounds still left to attach so i am dearly hoping that might be it. I have full juice on the electrics, however absolutely nothing when i turn the ignition......

That is one of the most beautiful Jeeps I have ever seen. And I've seen many different builds.

Are you going to relocate the solenoids for the winch? And are you going to paint the shackles that will eventually be going on the front bumper?

I have an idea of what you can add to your jeep. Before I go on, I hope this suggestion doesn't come across as me criticizing your Jeep. I honestly do think it's BEAUTIFUL as is! Here goes... Where Chrysler puts a silver "Jeep" sticker on lower portion of the front quarter panel (where the "Jeep" logo is stamped in), you could put a black "Jeep" sticker, or simply paint a matt black "Jeep" there. If not black, perhaps something that isn't clearly visible when looked at straight on, but is visible at certain angles.

Edit: One additional question.... will that still fit in your garage (get by the door) without airing down the tires?

Thanks for the kind words :) It was an interesting project to say the least and there are allot of things i would do differently if i were to do it again however i am very happy with how it turned out.

In time (and when funds can accommodate). With the shackles, if i paint i want the paint to be durable. My "Rattle Can" approach would just not suffice for these parts :)

I agree :) It is the plan. I also want to do a bit of research on the numbering / stars that i see from time to time on Military jeeps as well and add accordingly.

Edit: One additional question.... will that still fit in your garage (get by the door) without airing down the tires?

JUST! I have about 2" of clearance in it's current stance.

Well..... The time has come. I have pretty much completed what i wanted to get done (Minus the full cage) for this year.

I ended up replacing the rad with a new one as the existing was pretty crappy.

I got the NOVAK TC shift kit installed and other than a few adjustments to make, it is very smooth and so much simpler than that OE setup.

Had a CV Driveshaft made up and reconnected my rear axle.

Brakes are all bled and secured and work well. I may have to rebuild the rears however am hoping i don't have to as i plan on swapping our the rear axle anyways :beerchug:.

Replaced the visors from tan to Black to match the rest of the colors.

Had a nice 2.5" SS exhaust bent up for past the cat with a real nice sounding muffler. The tail pipe site a bit lower than i was hoping, however i just might live with it or perhaps take it back for alternatives.. We'll see.

My lad who was to build my custom cage had to back out at the last minute do to an impending house move so it might not happen now till next year. In the interim, i painted up my existing cage in black and bolted it back up for now.

Regarding the engine, i was amazingly surprised that the ONLY problems i had were that i neglected to connect the wiring for the ignition AND there was a relay blown for the starter. EVERYTHING else worked as it should, which is incredible considering i literally had every single part apart to de-grease, etc.... It just blows my mind.

The ONLY downside i still have issues iwith my LED's. I brought it to a shop and they advised me that it's my turn signal switch as it doubles as a multi-function switch for the lights and signals. It's been on back order now for over 2 weeks with no end in sight.... As a result of this, i cannot get the TJ safetied. So, i am scowering the sites for a used one. IF i don't come across one locally by the end of the weekend, i just might buy one off eBay and take my chances.. We'll see.

I still have to get myself some D-ring shackles, some door surrounds and a soft top if i have any intentions of driving it late into the fall.

I hope to, over this coming winter swap out the axles for D44's with 4.88's and ARB's. We'll see how the funds co-operate :)

Some final parting shots :)

I don't even have it licensed, safetied or E-tested yet. I first ran a few snowmobile trails around my place with my son and he just loved it. Then, i remembered a neighbor mentioning a muddy section that i should try. So i did. Put it right up to almost the doors! Suffice it to say, it "Ain't" clean no more :)

Update and to anyone who could shed more light / insight??

I had brought the TJ in to a local shop get this LED light issue (http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=95268) resolved about 3.5 weeks ago. It is the last remaining issue i need to address to get it safetied. They ran some tests / diagnostics and determined that my Signal multi-function switch (Basically the level on the LHS of the column to control the signals) is toast and i would need a new one. Ordered it however I was advised that the part was backordered and it might take a while....

3.5 weeks later and still no ETA or part the fawkers.... So, over the weekend i did a few tests of my own. Basically, I removed the switch completely (I.E. disconnected the two connectors that attach it to the wiring harness). The thing is... I still have issues with the wiring?? So how the Fawk can it be the switch if the problem persists without it even there?

Long story short, whenever i connect the rear LED's, they come on full power (I.E. it's as if someone was applying the brakes) all time. Even with the keys out of the ignition, they are still on. The same applies to the overhead sound bar light. It too is on all time ( I have to keep it disconnected at the harness connector level so as to not drain the battery.. In fact, i can have my rear LED's and back ups completely disconnected and the dome light is on full time. So, i do not think it is as a result of the LED's either.....

I have in essence eliminated these as being the culprits so now where should i start looking? As i am not "Wiring-proficient", any help on this would be great!!

Cheers,

MikNov
09-16-2009, 01:39 AM
I have had a similar issue trying to figure out my wiring when I hooked up some simple round flush mounted trailer lights. No one seemed to be able to diagnose the issue, so I just pulled dog-house and gutted my entire rear lights by taking out the gas tank - ended up being an extra green/red wire that wasn't supposed to be there according the factory diagram schematic - something as simple as that.

Forgive me for assuming - but I imagine you have a Haynes manual or FSM with tail light wiring diagram. That'd be your best bet so as to triple check everything.

As for LED's - i'll be assuming again - you picked up the electronic flasher relay from Genright or the like?

Anyhow, I doubt I'll be any help - anything else is beyond me....

countryboy
09-16-2009, 08:35 AM
I have the FSM
I have the Genright LED's but instead i hacked my relay A-La Stu!! Granted, this prob existed prior to this hack and the hack is only relevant to the blink rate.

I truly believe that it has something to do with a short or loose wire somewhere between the front signals (As they work) and the back signals. A loose connector, a fuse??, something like that......

MikNov
09-16-2009, 10:17 AM
In that case - i'd be willing to wager a bet that it must be a loose wire some place somewhere and its seeping current where its not supposed to. Or maybe even a ground is disconnected somewhere. I'm thinking your circuit is not completing a full circuit somewhere...

countryboy
09-16-2009, 09:43 PM
Thanks to some info PM'd to me by Rikker, i decided to do a bit more digging. What i found out is that the brake switch (The one that resides down by the brake pedal) was not being depressed when the brake pedal was released? Why i don't know as everything is snugged up and tight? As a result of this, the lights were sensing that i was still applying the brakes, even though it was not the case. So, i have added a dallop of PL to the touch point on the switch. Once that has dried and has hardened, i will re-install it and hopefully that will do it. I have rough wired all the rear and everything is working as it should.

Now, the one problem that did come up though is that i broke my fawking headlamp switch!!! The damn pull came right out!! It sound like the retainer that holds the pull inside the headlamp switch as snapped off... Fawk. Anyone have one kicking around ????

just read your thread nice job for sure.. dont worry bout the paint holding up for one second.. i did my xj a couple of yrs ago and it holds up really well i have driven through some pretty thick bush that would rip regular paint right off the fenders.. yes it has scratched a bit, but with the rattle cans you can touch it up so easy.. the only thing i would say is dont leave the mud on it too long i didnt wash it for a few weeks and the mud had stained the flat paint a liltte bit.. soooo another can of paint and it was fixed.. i wont get a real paint job again , not on a wheelin rig

:fawk::fawk: I KNOW!!!!! LOL

I want to go to 37's but i don't think i will be able to do without sacrificing the garage storage or severely deflating everytime.

Once i get me axles, i will start to do some measurements to see what i can and cannot do. I just might drop it back down to 4" springs....

HEAVY DUTY!!!! ratcket straps go along way when it comes to getting a jeep through a short door. Yes I've done it before.

Frame to axle, and load her up!!!!

That's why airbags are nice... But my jeep's front fits in, but I have to be careful because of the air.

I finally acquired my axles for the build over the winter :beerchug::beerchug:

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2009/12/49.jpg

Specs are:

FRONT:
1976 Ford HP D44, narrowed to ~62 inches. It has Rubicon express mounts along with some JRC bracing. It uses stock rubicon 44 width shafts, so its easy to buy replacements. The inner shafts are alloy USA evolution series shafts, the outers are stock and it has mile marker lockouts. It has 5.13 gears and a ARB air locker. Brand new u joints / bearings / dust seals / carrier bearings and pinion bearings / ball joints, all the seals, and the brakes, nothing is more than 1000 miles old.

REAR:
Rear is a 98 ford 8.8, matching 5.13s and a ARB air locker. It has treks off-road u bolt eliminators (1 inch lift ones I believe) and high clearance shock mounts. It also has a truss and the tubes have been welded to the housing. All brake components are brand new as the previous owner bought the setup without brakes. All the bearings and seals have about 1000 miles on them. Comes with a set of spidertrac wheel adapters than set it out at the same width as the front and make it 5on 5.5 bolt pattern like the front.

STEERING:
JCR one ton steering. It is set up under the knuckle and will come with a reamed out pitman arm. The trac bar was custom made by JCR. The mount is very heavy duty and it used a adjustable hiem joint on the axle side and a bushing on the frame side.

I'll have to redo the rear brackets as it was set up for leaves, however I am installing a Clayton LA kit, which comes with new UCA and shock brackets and does away with the rear sway and trackbar so all i have to get are the LCA and bucket mounts....

It also came with all the ARB stuff as well (Compressor, wiring, lines, switches, etc......

I have MORE than pushed my discretionary spending, so I'll be laying low now for some time to keep peace :bigok::bigok:

You have LOTS of play on the top of the door. Why not just extend the garage door opening by a foot? You'll have to buy a new door, but being able to park it without all the hassle will be well worth it. When the jeep grows, so should the garage LOL.

LOVE the colour!

Priorities jeep_girl_thing, priorities :beerchug:. Perhaps over time, when i go to 5pt.

As for the carpet, you just fell into that category of folks who base comments on trends. Everybody says... Remove the carpet. Well i say fawk that:fawk::fawk: I cannot see why i would remove the carpet, other than due to dirt, moisture trap, etc... The inside of the tub is lined with herculiner so i have that extra layer of protection. I like the feel of carpet in the jeep. I would rather have black, but mehhh, tan works too. It deadens the sound a bit and gives it a comfy feeling :)

We'll see how it goes next year and whether or not, i will be throwing it out :) Thanks for the kind words though :)

Trend? Been doing it for at least 7 years :) Probably still have the ones from the YJ and TJ laying around in storage somewhere.

I always hated my carpets and took them out. I just found it so much easier when hosing down the inside and less of a pain in the ass then scrubbing them to get out the nastiness. I remember shoveling out mud from the YJ; was REALLY glad there were no carpets :p

Then again, I'm also the type who drives in the rain without doors and a top while watching the dash short out :hahano:

Aiiight. I found a screamin' deal on tires with free shipping that ends tonight so i gotta shiat and get off the pot or else lose the deal (www.ntwonline.com). Questions i have for those that care to respond:

15", 16" or 17" wheel? Are there downsides to going with a larger wheel other than cost? I see the benefit (I.E. clearance on caliper, which i might need, considering i am running larger axles)?
Beadlocks..... Bare with me as i am still in the learning stages on this topic.

Can you add DYI beadlocks to pretty much any steel wheel.? Is it specific to sizes (Noticed TMR has them for 15" and 17" but not 16"?)
Am i better off to get a set already made or go by way of getting some steel wheels and having the beadlocks welded in?

First off I would stay away from 15" wheel, it wont fit one ton axles when you eventually go that route. TMR does make 16" beadlocks, same price as 17's (I talked to tim).

If you spend all that time on weld in bead locks and then decide to switch to tons, you can just re center the wheels..

Bottom line 16's or 17" steel wheels and yer good to go.

btw what kind of tires?

Mmmm 4 to 1. Bastard. :fawk: One nice thing about my beadlocks (Allied) and sure many other is the machined inner ring makes it idiot proof when mounting. With just a flat ring you have to be carefull that you get the tire balls dead center. And i would save some pennies and just go 15", calipers will fit. More rubber, less steel. You'll need new rims if you go to tons anyway, 8 bolt. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers

Well.... I figured i'd post up an update on the build... OD's had been neglected for some time however over the past 2 weeks or so, have been working on it every chance i got.

A fellow Offroader came down last weekend to give me some welding tips and lend a hand, which made a big difference in what can and cannot do now with a welder !!!

We tacked in the front CA mounts on the frame and got the axle in and the arms... As well, because of the issue I have with the bolt holding the track bar on the axle, (http://ovo.ca/forums/showthread.php?3466-Reducing-axle-side-track-bar-mount-bolt-hole) a washer was welded to the outside of the bracket for the time being... I will have to permanently address this before i get it out on the road...

I ended up picking up a bracket kit from Rusty's for the rear axle and i tacked them in place. Only downside was that they sent me two PS rear shock brackets . I called them and they are going to send me a DS bracket ASAP. I marked it out and will tack it in once i get it. Then, i tackled the rear CA frame mounts... I fawked this part up twice!!!! First on the DS, i mis-measured by about 1.5"... I caught it early though, so i cut the tacks off and measured it out again.... Then, when i did the PS side, i did the exact mistake again!!! This one though i only found out after i connected up the rear axle... Suffice it to say, i finally got it all set up, pinion set at 16 degrees.

I then tackled the belly up. I knew that it would not fit due to the new CA brackets from Clayton, so i made some cardboard mock ups of the new skid and then cut them to fit the frame rails... I then transposed it onto the skid and then cut out the areas that needed to go. Bolted it up and it fit perfectly!!

I finally was able to throw on the IROKs! I grabbed a set of used steelies for now, but i am not a big fan of the 8" width, so will be keeping my eye out for some 10's. I ended up sanding them down and painted them flat black and OD. I then rolled her out of the garage for the first time since October.....:

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/460.jpg

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/461.jpg

I then gave it a go to get the cage into the tub with an engine hoist. My first attempt failed and she fell over, but the 2nd attempt was a success.. Thank god for the rattle can paint job!!!

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/462.jpg

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/463.jpg

I ended up cutting out the harness bar between the B pillars 'cuz it was just too far back for me to still be able to use the back seat.... I did however leave the suspension seat mounts in and hope to find a set in the next few months....

Once i get my pitman arm back (Had to get it reamed out to accept the HD TRE's), i can then start cycling the lift. I do have to shift the front over about and 1" or so towards the DS as the coils are sitting wrong. I also think i might have to push the front forward a bit.. The back from what i can tell so far is sitting just right. I do however have a slight variance in the rear of about 5/8" from one corner to the other. I think it might be lower coil buckets. Not sure yet how i am going to address that. I also have new upper coil buckets so that i can straighten the coils out. Haven't decided yet whether I am going to weld them in or not.... Time will tell.....

I had some time today to work some more on the TJ and tackled the cage tie-ins. I never liked the way some installs sandwiched the C channel that runs the length of the tub so i cut it out where the B pillar plate mate to the sheet metal:

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/465.jpg

I first cut it wide enough for the underside mount plate but then once i was getting ready to bolt in the bushing, i realize i had to cut it wider to accommodate the bushing bolt, so i had to undo it all and cut some more....

Once in place, i cut some pipe to fit and welded it up to the frame:

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/466.jpg

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/467.jpg

http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/468.jpg

I only was able to get the one B pillar done today... Fawk it takes time... I wanted to get away from being down on my back, so i decided to weld in my front loop that i had bent some time ago....

I did a bit of cycling of the suspension tonight to see what it could take... Holy fawkkkkkk... It just kept going and going. It's unreal the difference between this and my RE 4.5 lift i had on the jeep.

I was very happy with how well centered the rear turned out once it started to compress. For the front as well, i was convinced i would have to move it all forward a bit, but as it compressed, it moved right into the center of the wheel well.... Bonus!!!

Granted, i did not have the driveshafts, shocks and brake lines connected... But you get the idea http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/3.gif

Well, i hooked up some straps on the rims and worked the suspension over with the engine hoist and most of the components all connected.....

Front clears extremely well. I only hit on full turn to the left on the LCA. When i was cycling it out, the rear tires do eventually hit my coil pads on the frame side however it's quite the ways up. My only solution to that would be I guess to play with the backspacing on the wheels but that will be for another year http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/3.gif

I will also do a bit of trimming of the sheet metal on the fronts of the rear wheel wells. Mainly for aesthetics though as i don't think the shocks will allow the tires to cycle up that much into the wheel wells.

Well, i had a day to myself so i focussed on finishing up the rear. I pulled the rear out, primed it up, then shot with a few coats of rustoleum. I then tackled the frame mounted rear coil brackets. I never liked the way the rear coils were on such a nasty angle so i picked up a relocation bracket kit from Rusty's and started in on the installation. It was a dirty spot to get to in removing the old one however once out it went quite well.

I then had a hell of a time getting some bump stops in place because of the variances through the chain on bolt sizes and corresponding holes!! I ended up hacking off the end of these Allen head bolts and welding them to threaded rod. That allowed the bolt to make it through the bump stop but still thread into the relocation bracket up top..

I am now on to the Transfer case. I need to pull it and remove the existing SYE and then install:

Tera Extreme Short SYE
Tera 4:1
Tera 2lo

Once this is in progress, i can then paint the skid plate and weld in some plate on the bottom of the frame to replace those rivnuts.....

Left to do:

Tie up the brakes
Finish welding the frame side CA mounts
Get a new Driveshaft
Tie in the rear bench seat
Figure out what to do with the front seats
Make some harness bars
Hook up the seatbelts
Finish my front hoop/stinger
Set up the ARB and lines
Misc bunch of other crap....

Good Times.

So, i finished the TC overhaul.... I got it pulled out on Sunday and started in on Tuesday. I was able to do all 3 components really at the same time. A good number of the parts attached to the front half had to be re-used so i did that first. Basically disassembled it completely. Of course i ran out of table space http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/3.gif

I then re-assembled Tera 4:1 with all the attached parts, then i installed the 2lo directly into the 4:1. Then the SYE went into the 4:1. The only problem i had is that one of the gear rings somehow got flipped. Once i had it all ready for the back half, i found it making an odd noise when i spun everything... I ALMOST ignored it and continued. But instead, .... I pulled the camera, reviewed my photos i had taken and sure as fawk, i noticed the reversal.... A few minutes later, the sound was gone. Got it connected back together with the back half and it's ready to go. I just have to now get it back into the truck. All in all, once i had it out, about 4 hrs to complete...... When i did the SYE the first time, i think it took over 13hrs *lol*

Worked on the skid plate last night (Etch, POR15). On we go.

It's been a while since i updated this build.... Been very busy, trying to cram every moment i have into this thing. I was really hoping to have it completed for Spring Fever, but it just didn't happen. The one mistake i made when i started this was NOT getting it safetied when i first bought it. As a result of this, i can't get plates until i setup my emergency brakes.

In any event, i have pretty much completed everything i wanted to for this year, less a few things.

- I still want to cut to fit a stinger/tie ins for the front.
- I would still really like to hook up the harnesses

I had it out on some "Backroads" today and really had a chance to test it out. Few things have come up, negative and positive:

PROS:

The 5.13 gears are awesome. I am very impressed with the power i have running these 37" tires.
The seats are VERY comfortable
The 4:1 is unreal. I did a few nice climbs and didn't even have to touch the gas pedal http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/03/3.gif
Just over 24" of clearance at the skid plate.

CONS:

My front ARB will not hold air http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/images/imported/2010/05/4.gif It almost seems as though it's something in the diff itself. At first i thought it was the solenoid, but after poking around today, i don't think so...
My 2lo is not working. Where i should have 2WD in low, i have Neutral. I do have some linkage issues with the TC and am thinking this might be the culprit. I haven't decided yet whether i pull the TC out again or just run it as is for this summer. I do have the 4 lo which is really what i was after
Those front seats are hard to get in and out of !!!!
I am rubbing on the rear back fender wells on full stuff. I just might do some sheetmetal cutting but i am not sure how i would go about getting a soft edge by bevelling inwards??
I have about 2 full turns of the steering wheel more in one direction. So, i have i have to pull the pitman arm and re-align it all.

Overall, i am extremely pleased to date. I just can't wait to get "Properly" on the road. Hopefully in the next 2 weeks.

Well.... As crazy as it sounds, OD TJ has been sold. I had a lad from Bath area make me an offer i could not refuse! So she's gone.... In retrospect, it's probably a good thing. After a few years now of wheeling, i realized that i want something i can really bash and not hesitate. So, i am going to move to a buggy of sorts.... Anyone who has a lead on a 2 seater with tons, V8, Auto, etc.... Let me know ~!

A few parting shots of the last few runs i had :)

I put them back as far as it allowed and ensured that i corrected the bow in the coil spring. I also think the kit provided instructions on suggested distance back...

Parts lying around? *lol*, sure: http://www.jeepkings.ca/forums/showthread.php?134838-Misc-Build-TJ-parts&highlight=

These are the items i have right now kicking around. Rad's tentatively spoken for. CV DS is also somewhat tentatively spoken for, however money talks !!!! :)
