    grand am voltage question

ok so my girlfriends car has been acting up, i just replaced a dead battery and ive also noticed that the voltage guage climbs up when your driving and drops down at ilde, i put a meter on it and it was showing quite high( 18v ) when rev'd and 10-12ish at idle, im thinking the voltage regulator is no good, what else could be toast?
also how hard is it to swap out the voltage regulator, i have an alternator that works that i have crossed the part numbers and they look to be the same, so im thinkin to switch it out
If its a mechanical device i can fix it

If I am not mistaken, the regulator is internal to the alternator so an alty swap would fix that. To be sure though get it tested; I think? Parts Source will bench test them for you.

The regs are internal, and if it's a 3.1 it's very easy swap (maybe 20 minutes with hand tools). The alternators are easy to find in the wreckers too, if you want a plug-and-play option. They usually come with a 3 month warranty. GM alts are generally pretty good.

ya her dad usually does the work on it, and when he changed it out about 6 months ago with wrecker parts he was smart enough to keep the old one which has a good regulator, so im gonna try and switch housings, ar get him to do it cause i hate this car
