Can windshield washer fluid go bad or lose it's effectiveness?

The last few days my washer fluid appears to be freezing and doesn't work when I spray it. Initially it will spray and then it will stop completely. I can hear the pump motor working but nothing comes out. I thought the hoses or the sprayers were clogged but once the Jeep warms up the sprayers will work again. I don't have any issues with the rear wiper, it works every time.

I've had this problem for a few days in a row now so I checked the reservoir to see if it was empty but it was full. It looked like ice was forming on top so I stuck my finger in and it was really slushy so I'm wondering if washer fluid can go bad and lose its ability to resist freezing? I have the pink Teflon washer fluid that says it's good to -49 degrees but the coldest it's been in Toronto has been -20 with windchilll. It was like a slushy in my reservoir, I've had the washer fluid in my Jeep for awhile now so I'm wondering if it can go stale and lose effectiveness over time? .

mud bros.1 has a good point. There is a big problem with counterfeit products out there, you may have gotten one.

if you had some summer wwf in the reservoir when you added the winter fluid, that would have diluted it some.
    WHAT WOULD MACGYVER DO?

Pink is summer fluid... at least I've never seen pink winter stuff, Teflon or not. You probably got stuff with the wrong label on it.

check your lines from the fluid pump to the sprayer by the windshield. one time, i had a line split just after the pump and it sprayed the fluid towards the ground.

Very true. That is why I pretty much drain mine in the fall before adding the winter stuff.

Some places also top up your fluids when they do an oil change. I wonder if that is another possibility for causing dilution?

Usually garages only use -40 all year, but like Andy said it's not cheap. Some shops get WW fluid in concentrate and mix it to their own liking. During the summer it was patheticly weak at more than one shop I've been too.

Short version; Park it indoors and let it melt. Pump it empty and fill it with -40 from a sealed bottle.

There are lots of others with the same problem as you. If you do a google search it seems the -45 is bogus.

It seems like more and more products from CT are pure shite.

If anyone lives near a NG (National Grocers) you can get a case of 4 for less than $8.

I agree that the green-yellow stuff with de-icer works best but costs more.

LOL! Good one plowboy! Thanks for the comments guys. I am going to empty the reservoir and put in new stuff. Obviously the fluid in there now for whatever reason is freezing.

I use only the yellow Rain-X all year, keep away from the cheap crap, it'll freeze up and bugger up your pump, my dad sees it all the time.
In short i'd drain your system and refill and cycle the system with some new good name brand fluid.

Pink can also be optikleen (GM fluid)

Washer fluid has a high alcohol content. Alcohol will evaporate if not in a sealed container, less alcohol in the wwf and the freezing point wil raise.

In short yeah WWF can loose it's antifreeze properties.
