gas will wash the oil off of the cylinder walls. without that oil you will not have enough compression for your engine to run
ok well i have a 95 jeep grand cherokee with the 5.2L v8, i boght it about a month ago it needed a water pump so i drove it home kept the coolent toped up, a few days later got the time to take the old water pump off and went to car quest and got them to order me a new one in , few days later got it and instaled it got every thing back together and went to start it but it wouldnt , sooooo i got my mechanic to stop by and take a listen and he said it sounds like there is no compresion!...... so before i went and did the timeing chain like he suggested i asked a buddie that is very mechanily inclined and he said to smell the oil on the dip stick and see if it smells like gas so i did, and low and behold it is thiner then it should be and smells like gas! now my question is, would gas in the oil make this jeep not wanna start? can any one help me figure this out before i do the chain! thanks

ok will do thank you very much , ill post what happens in a few hours
pull the plugs one at a time and put your finger over the hole and have someone crank it over, it will tell ya if ya got compression pretty quick
If its a mechanical device i can fix it
You may also want to find out why you have gas in your oil.
^ is your engine fuel injected or carb? if you have a carb and has a mechanical fuel pump on the engine you could have a leaking diaphragm allowing fuel to leak into the engine.

ok i changed the oil but i think ima get my mechanic over to take another look at ill run these ideas by him ... thanks again to every one
keep us posted as to what he says

To me, it sounds like a problem with the rings. The 5.2 is fuel injected, not carb. I think the last carb engine was an Isuzu back in '94, but don't quote me on that.
Bad rings will usually also cause increased engine vibration as the lack of compression also means the firing forces are now not balanced.
Damn, where's C.C. when you need him.

first thing i would do is pull the plugs change the oil and do a compression test and actually see what the numbers are
