    Re-building CJ-7 with a bit of YJ

Working on rebuilding my 85 CJ-7… Last time I rebuild it was back in 2000 when I bought it. My frame is rotted, so it is time to start over again.

The plan for the build is:
CJ – Frame, Axles, Transfer Case, Grill, Fenders, Brakes
YJ – Engine, Transmission, Leaf Spring, Tub,

I have picked up an older CJ Frame not sure what year, but there is an extra cross member my 85 didn't have. I have been welding it up fixing some hole. I have it primed and just starting the painting.

Lots of work, but it'll be worth it when you're done.

Are you going with a newer 4.0?

If I was a Jeep, they'd have parted me out a LONG time ago.

    I don't know if I would say "newer" but... I have a 1992 4.0L with AX-15 which I will be trying to attach a Dana 300 to.

Not sure if that will work out or if I need a clocking ring.

PM Bonecracker, he swapped a 94 4.0 and AW4 from an XJ into his CJ-7, and used his old Dana 300.

AW4 in a CJ? Wow, shoehorn needed there!

Are you going to swap to fuel injection this round? I would strongly recommend it - eliminates all the issues the Carters had. Of course there's the Motorcraft carb swap option too.. but I'd rather do some extra wiring and have a self-tuning vehicle.

Not sure about the AX-15 but I do have a 4.0HO with the AW4 in my 86 CJ with my original Dana 300 bolted to it. I used a clocking ring, the bolt pattern for the AW4 and 300 are the same but the output shaft on the AW4 was a little too long and I wanted it clocked flat anyhow. I used an XJ transmission cross-member which fit beautifully on the CJ with just a little trimming to the length. Custom drive shafts front & rear because the Dana 300 moves back by 4-6" from stock when bolted to the AW4(again, not sure about the AX-15). I put the entire wiring harness from the cherokee in the CJ, but I have read that it is fairly simple to mate the two using the CJ harness. I got some info from JeepKings but cjoffroad.com was the main source for the swap info. Every issue you will run into for a 4.0 swap in a CJ is covered step by step there, with pics. Good Luck with your swap.

yup I ve got an AX15 between the 304 and my Dana 300

I bought a clocking ring from a member of another forum but I had to drill it myself for whatever degree I wanted

with the AX15 Ive heard that you encounter some contact between the side of the AX15 case and the Dana 300 shifter I dont have this problem since my shift mount has been modified to accomodate a twin stick configuration

    hope this helps

Ill get pics of my setup up as soon as I can find the cord for my camera

    Rolling Chase...

So I managed to get the wheels and engine on... It turns out that you don't need a engine hoist to put the engine with tranny on to the frame... Got it done with 2 people helping. Put the frame on the engine, then the axles on the frame.

To connect the AX15 to the Dana 300, I picked up at spacer/clocking ring from DVSJEEP.

I have also manged to break my camera... it didn't like being droped on cement

    Gas Tank

The plan for the gas tank was to attach the YJ fuel pump to the bottom of the CJ flange removing the CJ filter. I was worried about the pump as it would have been unsupported; I would have needed to run the wires etc… so I just put the whole YJ unit in. I am hoping the 1” body lift will allow the enough clearance for YJ Gas/Vent hose.

    Clocking Ring/Spacer

Here is the clocking ring/spacer. I am going from AX15 to Dana 300. With the spacer in the Dana 300 Shifter Bracket is hitting the transmission, it will clear it if a use a different clocking hole. I want to keep the shifter brackets level. I will be shaving the bottom of the shifter bracket off, until there is clearance.

    Mounting the Transmission

For mounting the transmission I decided to use the AX15 bracket and with the CJ poly mounts attached to it. The bolts into the AX15 where hitting the raised part of the CJ skid plate... So I removed it. Will be welding in a piece of flat steel.

    Mounting the Transmission -

Here are pictures of the YJ - AX15 mounting bracket and the CJ Skid plate after I modified them.

AX15 Transmission Mount Plate - cut a 1/4" off the back so it would not hit the Dana 300, Cut off the exhaust mount.
CJ Skid Plate - cut off the raise section and replaced it will flat steel.
