    Post Haliburton seasonal trail restrictions

In response to an invitation from MNR and Haliburton Highlands Stewardship Council (HHSC) the OF4WD attended user group meetings in Haliburton to review motorized recreation in the county. The meetings were chaired by Haliburton Highlands Stewardship Council. At the table were HHSC, MNR, local snowmobile club, OFTR (off road motorcycle group), HATVA (Haliburton ATV Association) and myself representing OF4WD.

Given the increasing popularity of motorized recreation in the county it was felt a review was in order to discuss items of concern. Concern was raised over the damage to trails from use during the spring run off. The groups agreed that action was required and are supporting the Ministry of Natural Resources local office initiative that the motorized users stay off the trails during the spring runoff. Signs will be posted on the trail heads asking users to stay off until May 1st.

The OF4WD policy has always been mid/late May for the start of the 4x4 wheeling season. Most of the 4wd community are conscious of environmental concerns and support the OF4WD position, so an imposed official MNR restriction of not before May 1st should not be considered as unreasonable.

Copy of press release can be seen at http://www.of4wd.com
