    Phreaks IronHead Build

Moved this into a proper build thread.
Hopefully we can see more Bike builds on here..
(maybe even a few Jeep theme bike builds) LOL

    I got a 1975 ironhead
this is my first street bike, and my first real build with a bike...
I,m going to do my best to log as many pictures and comments as possible as i go.
My plan was to do a quick rebuild and paint just to get on the road this spring
but as i get more into this.. I think i,m going to do this over a year
and take my time.. If I get enough time over the summer.. i just might have it out for End Aug..

If I had the chance to rethink the bike.. I would not have taken a 75/76 ironhead
they are the bastard years as everyone seams to be saying.. and really hard to get straight answers and parts.
Its has forward controls on it now.. but i hate them.. cheap and un-safe (these ones) and I want my footing under me
So i was looking for mid controls.. ha ha.. not a chance.. i,ll keep searching but i think i,m prob going to have to fab
something up myself.. because 75 was the first year the shift was on the left side.brake on right. they did a cross over for 75/76 years.

    Any way

    As I got it

Starting the Strip down front fender off and Half the fat boy tank off.

test fitting the seat. needs long springs and new mounts.. but it looks like it will work just great

    this is just the Start..
oil tank is next.. then i can get to the bolts for the rear fender.
at the same time i,m going to be heading to P.A for a army amo box for the battery and electrical.. get them test fitted
then the Front end .comes off (either going to put a springer front or powder coat this one...etc.

the wiring is a mess on this bike.. a real ****ing mess.. I dont know much about electrical but i guess its a good time to learn.. ha ha

As you can see my garage is a mess.. So i,m limited in space until i can clean it up.
the Prob is.. i,m in the middle of home renos (building the wife a new Studio)
that should be finished by Mid April So i can make room then.. to really get going on this.

---------- Post added at 05:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:03 PM ----------

Finally got the chrome off.. LOL
Oil tank is out as well..

Went to P.A to get a Amo bix.. to find out it wont work for my needs.
to long.. So i guess i,ll have to figure something else out for a new battery box and a way to hide the electrical
I did bike up a bike Lift.. which will help me in the long run.. I wont have to lay ont he ground to work on it.. ha ha

got a really good look at the wiring and started to map it all out..
found out there was a screaming eagle kit put on the bike and i,m thinking
it has been ported out from a 1000 to a 1200
I wont really know until i pull the motor and start the rebuild on it..

Started stripping the wiring out this weekend..

I am tring to map out as much as i can..
Like i mentioned before.. First build and i,m noit great with electrical.
but i have decided to go full on and replace every wire.. and hide as much as i can..

Went to the Toronto bike show and found a pretty good deal on a tank.

A quick mock up for tank height

    height 2

you might not see the diff in the pictures.
i,m just using my blackberry for photos
and this was a really quick look to make sure its what i want to go with.

lookin good. with that front end i have i was goin to use a old front rim woth drum brake. it is 4 1/2" wide inside to inside, and 35 1/4" from centre of axle to top of the bottom triple. for your wiring ultima makes a nice kit that takes alot of the headache out of it, comes with shrink wrap all new plugs. http://www.ultimaproducts.com/wiringsystemplus.html

Very cool. It's been a long time since i tore into the meat of a bike. Grew to hate it when it became a job rather than a hobby.

A quick update.. Still trying to get the tank to sit properly.. still need to come down 2in..
there is brackets on the back bone that will get cut off to drop the tank..
I have a line on a Oil tank hopefully this week.. old fire extinguisher.. converted
then i can mock it up and get the new battery tray fabbed up..
then i can pull the enigine and send everything off to the blaster.. and get ready for paint..

---------- Post added at 02:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:14 PM ----------

Since i,m planning to copper all the fuel lines and oil lines..
i was wondering of anyone knew of a place that could copper dip my rear fender?
right now its chrome.. i was thinking of painting it or just running a chome fender.. but i think a copper dipped fender would like pretty bad ass

Picked up a fire extinguisher Oil tank.. (needs to be cut down about 2 in to fit properply. Not sure i like the area for the mounting...

had to cut of some brakets from the old tank off the backbone to get it to fit properply

Most of it is off.. Still need some grinding

this is what it looks like with the rear fender and seat and tank mock up

Just trying to get everything mocked up properply then i,m pulling everything off and pulling the engine
to grind off anything that does not need to be there.. and fill in any holes that were used prior for mounting things that no longer are there..
then paint and rebuild and re-wire..

Is been awhile since i updated..
been busy with family stuff and did not like the oil tank
so i search out a new one.. finally got it in
I have got the bike down to frame and engine

Still need some grinding on the back bone and other odds and ends grinded off.

but i,m plugging away when i can.. engine should be out in the next week or So.. then all the grinding can get done
    and blast the frame

    Also as a cool factor
My wife painted me this a month or so ago.. I thought some of you might like it..
It hangs in my man room...
