when I got BBD's done last yr which is a 95, with a 350 in it, it was nothing more than a sniff test.

Now it's Pipi's Black Betty Build

My 97 Tj with V8 swap was 2 speed tested via the tail pipe sniffer to 97 emissions standards this year.

anyways back to topic. yes lucky being an 97 it is only a sniffer test and had inquired before hand at the place i get my etests done and they said i'd be good to go. cool.

so that being said, I am debating keeping the current '93 (OBD1?) PCM set up since its just the sniff test BUT I am not sure if after splicing the harnes's together, if the PCM will relay to my OBDII gauge cluster ? caugh caugh Cheyne lol.

I' am not familiar enough with the finer points of operation of a 97 TJ gauge cluster to give an informed opinion. I would say that it is unlikely to get OBD1 and II protocols to communicate with each other since they have little in common. But I also doubt the 97 gauge cluster requires little more than a series of inputs with the correct resistance. I don't *think there is much interfacing going on in 97. I'm fairly sure CANBUS was not yet implemented so there would not be anything technically complex with gauge cluster communications in 97.

However, from an ownership point of view, I would want the OBDII PCM for the sake of diagnostics.

I can tell you that it will not matter what engine, wiring harness or computer you use for the swap - the same emissions rules will apply and you cannot change that. A 97 Jeep will get the tail pipe test no matter what.

I had seen a spreadsheet someone on the old interweb that had the specs of CANBUS and years. So exactly that, my thought would be that the proper splices being made would make the cluster work. Either way it would be nice to use the original cluster but we will see..

I agree with you however on keeping it all OBDII because the diagnostics. I mean, at the end of the day it's just easier for me to find a latter OBDII PCM and be done with it. But finding one without the security chip key is the question now, if not I'll have to have it reprogrammed.

OBDII started in 96. I would be skeptical that a 96 Dodge Ram would have a chip key. My loaded 99 3500 Laramie didn't. Don't quote me but I don't think those keys were available in Rams until the 3rd gens which began in 02.

I know with the Dodge Durangos that first year for the chip key was 2001. 2000 was the last year for the 5.2 in them as well as the last year for no security key. But that's a Durango...

1997 Jeep cluster uses a CCD bus system, same as the Ram of that era. Neither used chip keys in those years.
