    21st century CJ

Well I finally did it. I messed up my CJ9 for good now.

I took off all the propane stuff and added a pile o confusion and technology. I got the pig running this afternoon on gasoline and TBI fuel injection. Kept the 1983 4 bolt 350 Chebby block and heads and added 1988 TBI from my V30 parts truck.

I picked up a Jaz 60L fuel cell with dual outlets in a 2" sump, Carter 43 gallon/hour fuel pump, and assorted junk yard relays and buss bar. I even hooked up the a/c signal to the oba circuit so the computer bumps the rpm by 100 when the compressor kicks on or I can toggle it. So far so good and since I did everything from start to finish, as usual, I can troubleshoot, diagnose and fix any issue that may come up. Not a newbie project but not impossible.

I loved the way the propane setup ran, the simplicity, reliability and great drivability. The part I didn't like was the convenience or lack of it. Going on a road trip driving the Jeep required planning for fuel stops or bringing enough to make it to a known fill station. It would be great for a dedicated buggy but I still like to DD mine. It just wasn't practical to hop in it and drive for a few hours without knowing where you are going to fill up.

Hopefully the TBI gives me the same sort of reliability and drivability as the propane but with the added convenience of a gas station on every corner.

That's what I figured. I have a TBI setup... just need the harness and the puter. My quadrajet just runs too well to even think about swapping it out.

I tossed my quad a while ago. I got sick of the stumbling, flooding and crap off road.

Mine doesn't stumble or flood offroad like I thought it would. The only time it stalled out was when I was on my side.... which isn't really a bad thing. I am having a real hard time justifying going to TBI since this carb works so well.

So did you plant the fuel cell in the back where the tanks were or did you get it to fit underneath the Jeep so you have more cargo room?

The cell is in the back where the propane tanks (x3) used to sit. It takes up half of the the cargo area and is the same height as the inner fender. I still have rooms for a cooler and tools beside the cell and tent and sleeping bags on top.

What are you doing with the propane parts. mines on the verge of running, but missing a few things.

Got a spare filter and shutoff soleniod and wanna come down for a startup party for experienced support?

I don't have a spare filter but I do have a spare vacuum lock off with a decent filter in it.

I hope you used yellow gas tape or gas pipe dope. That was my biggest oops when I did mine the first time.

Niether, Loctite Sealant Rope rated for Liquid Propane.

I have a Vac Lockoff, but my Elec. Soleniod has a crack in it and I never had a filter. Thanks anyways, I'll just grab one of Ebay.

Vac lockoff is all you need. The electric thing is just more wires.

Do you have a build thread for this thing? Very interested as the family is growing.
