"No Name" White ZJ Build Up

    NOW:

    The Piece:

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ Limited
    5.2L - D30/D44a - Missing front drive shaft/smoked transfer case - overall STOCK!

    The Purpose:

Build my ZJ into a somewhat capable wheeling rig and have it remain as a DD. This will be an ongoing build/fix thread

    The Project, Plans and Parts:

    BOUGHT or acquired:

    - 5x Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ 33x12.50x15
    - 5x Black Procomp Rock Crawlerz
    - ZONE Offroad 4" ZJ Kit - (Thanks to Jim at Rock Spyder 4x4 for a great deal and service)
    - ZONE Steering Stabilizer - "" ""
    - ZJ OEM front tow hooks
    - Cobra CB

Needed, future idea or plan to buy:

    - 242 Transfer case 1995+
    - Dana 30 u-joint yoke
    - Appropriate length drive shaft
    - Hitch w/2" receiver (possibly temporary until fabricating a rear bumper)
    - Winch
    - Front bumper to possibly accommodate winch and tow points
    - Rear bumper with tow points as well
    - Swaybar discos
    - Adjustable trackbar
    - Rock rails
    - HD steering replacement

    Plans:

    - Find front DS and do a 242 swap, no wheeling till 4x4
    - Install lift kit, tires and steering stabilizer - DONE
    - Install tow hooks - DONE
    - Replace tie rod end - DONE
    - Remove front bumper and possibly rear bumper - may reinstall or run without instead of doing minor trimming - DONE
    - Bash in pinch seams - DONE
    - Minor rocker repair and paint - DONE
    - Paint metal "bumper" areas to match rockers - ???
    - Relocate charcoal canister and horn - DONE
    - Remove carpet in rear of jeep to start, possibly entirely one day

    More Pics:

It's never a bad feeling buying bigger rubbers...

Then the rims to go with them

Jim came through with a lift!

    I couldn't help it.....

Little bit of sanding and Rust Killer primer

Seeing as it is 2wd, I think you should call it the ZedGhey.

So I said off with the bumper and crap plastic from the wheel wells. Next step is to relocate the horn and charcoal canister, looks like somebody had a little run in and pushed the metal behind the plastic bumper in a bit, almost touching the rad. Everything else looks good

Then it was time to take off the aluminum 5x5.5 AR's and replace them with the beautiful Rock Crawlerz... the prep has me itching for this lift to go in

I do too ZJJeep. Thanks again for the tow hooks, skid and pump!

More updates to come and plans/parts to be added! This is one long awaited build for me and will be quite the learning experience as well

You know that is only temporary Jeff haha, but you're right it is pretty "Ghey" in 2wd, been great for a DD the last year or so but its the season of change.

Hahahah thats not even funny Jeff! It was cold, I backed out of my parking spot, ran over a 6inx6in chunk of jaggedy metal and gashed 3 inches into the rubber and sidewall lol, thank god I had a spare and a loving crew of bar bystanders to "cheer" us on.

LOL on their wheeling adventure though.

So lets hope for less rain if any today so I can make some progress on this piece of......

I can appreciate a lot of the work you've done to your ZJ and had to make my own build after seeing yours, see you on the trails

    Lookin' good.

I'm going to haul the lift out of my old Grand and stuff it in the ZJ I just bought a few months ago.

One recommendation if you're going to wheel it, put stiffeners on the main rails of the uni-body at a minimum.

Slam in the pinch seams in the front wheeel well. You'll slash a tire.

The stiffeners are something I am considering but haven't got around to yet. (Eric where are you?) It will be somewhat of a "budget" build but in reality nothing is budget about a ZJ or Jeeps in general lol, I threw the budget out of the window when buying these tires alone!

C.C., you got it, I already have that on my list of to do's and will be doing it while putting in the lift. A normal ZJ wheel well has quite a lot of sharp pinch egdes that'll chew/slice up some good rubber

94grand8, I feel your pain, even with a budget lift and whatnot.. the cost gets up there real fast. In a perfect world i'd be running long arms with 4.5-5" but we'll see how things pan out with this ZJ and what kind of $$$ I have down the road.

Ideas and suggestions welcomed by all, bring on the wrenching

I'll start off by saying big thanks to both Sara (Jeepgirl73) and Jeff (igotafrigginjeep) for their help!

Here are some pics to start, because we all love pics:

Fawkin around with the rear trackbar frame bolt the day before

    some porn

I can't tell you how much time was spend on that rear bolt, but it had to be cut both sides and pried out like nobody's business lol

    Jeff using some pry muscle

Don't ask what I was doing, but at least it didn't involve the pink screwdriver...

Not sure what is going on here

Rear with rubber mounted up, still work to be done with the trackbar and bumpstops

Onto the front... Sara showing her grinding skills

Drilling for bump stops... worn out bit... Sara saved the day with a new one

Fronts mounted up, still a good bit of work to be completed on the front as well but we got'er sitting on wheels to finish out the day. (still needs front LCAs and other things)

All in all a long but beautiful day out in the sun. Another big thanks for the help guys, definitely wouldn't have got what we completed in a day without help.

    Me before passing out

Found one more from the other day
