Need tech help on 8.25 rear axles....

Hey guys, I'm wondering.... I have a rear 8.25 rear axle from a 96 2.5 xj with an open diff and 4.10's. I now have a 98 xj sport with an 8.25 rear axle and limited slip and 3.07's.

I already know that the 96 likely has 27 spline axles and the 98 has 29 splines.... My idea is to take the limited slip and the axle shafts out of the 98 and swap them into the 96 so I can use the 4.10's.

The 98 has 33's on 6 inches of lift with plans for 35's. the 98 axles are geared at 3.07 right now and the tire/gear calculators say I should have 3.61's on 33" tires. With plans for 35's in the near future I'd like the 4.10's instead of the 3.07's.

My question is what do I need to change in the 96 housing to accept the limited slip and 29 spline axles from the 98? Is that even possible?

when you put it like that, you need to find out where the carier break is, its usually around 355-373 that use 2 different size carriers... rick im not sure its gonna be doable....

Huh? what do you mean, carrier break? Whats that?

This is what I'm looking at....

    Rear Axle

    1984–1989: Dana 35, non c-clip, with anti-lock braking system (ABS) or non-ABS.
    1990–1996: Dana 35, c-clip, ABS or non-ABS.
    1997–2001: Dana 35, c-clip, ABS.
    1991–1996: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts.
    Late 1996–2001: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 29-spline axleshafts.
    1987–1990: Dana 44, non-abs, 30-spline axleshafts.

carrier break is where they usually have 2 carriers, one that goes from low to mid and then from mid to high...
ian needed a different carrier for the new gears in the front of his truck then the stock one cause he was going from one end of the scale to the other... im not seeing anything that is showing that on yours

    completeoffroad.com shows carrier break 2.45 / 2.56 & up

yuccaman.com states that the carrier break on Chrysler 8.25" is
    2.45 & down / 2.56 & up
(and) since the highest XJ gear is the 3.07 included with most manual-shift Cherokees, the numerically lower 8.25" carrier isn't seen in our applications

So there is a carrier break for the 8.25, but not for Cherokee differentials

as steve said theres no break with the 8.25, you can swap shafts too as long as you change the spiders or lunchbox, whatever you have. just has to match up. Love this axle.
