    12 hour "chop shop" - '75 CJ5 tear down

I picked up a '75 CJ5 from Kennuck a little while back and finally got around to doing something with it...bought it for the wife (igotafrigginheadache) as a mother's day gift. It's a 1975 CJ5 Renegade Levis Edition in Trans Am Red with blue Levis seats and dash pad. It has a 304 V8, T15 3-speed, Dana 20 T-case, D30/D44 3.73 axles, power steering and power brakes (11"x2" drums all around).

The Jeep is going to need some major work on the tub, that was a known when I purchased it, but we were unsure of the condition of the rest of it...Ken had said the frame was in decent shape with one one section that would be an area of concern and the engine turned freely with a socket and bar on the crank pulley nut.

So, yesterday was the day...total tear down and storage of all parts worth keeping...many many thank yous to those who showed up to lend a hand, there is no way it would have been done in anywhere near the 12 hours it took from starting to setup for the day to having the everything totally cleaned up and put away (including tools and shelter).

And then it was time to start tearing it all down...

all stored away to work on as time permits and out of the weather, etc.

of course, everybody had to stop for a break when igotafrigginheadache ( <--- the wife, and owner of the 5) showed up with popsicles...

Amongst the many people who stopped thinking it was a yard sale, we did have a few Jeepers stop in...one was an older feller in his Buick Century who stopped in to check out what we were up to and chatted with us about his '42 for a little bit...then this guy pulled in looking for the local Chrysler dealer...nice looking J20...by no means perfect, but definitely a nice looking truck that he is not afraid to cruise around and haul gravel with (almost 2 tons at one point, from what he said)...

Again, many many thank yous to those who were able to come by and lend a hand...

Well, we had a number of broken bolts, but all in all it came apart nicely. As I said before, the body is in need of a lot of attention (potentially just replace the whole tub) but it will be a nice piece to have around and mess with to see what we are going to do (not sure if it will stay full bodied or if it will be boatsided/dovetailled/etc.)...the frame was in great shape considering the age, with only the last 1' to 1.5' of the driver side frame rail needing some attention.

Pulling the top end off the motor showed some great promise, only one cylinder with some surface rust in it, likely from some moisture just sitting in there for at least a few years...

We are pleased with what we have, this will be a long term project (I have been given 5 years to have it on the trails) and updates will come with any major steps in progress...first thing to tackle is to get the frame back in shape...clean it all up, replace the metal that needs attention, prime and paint, etc.

Seeing as everybody likes to give their project a name, the wife has come up with TETANUS for her first Jeep.

BWAHAHAHAHHAHA...Jason, you owe me a keyboard my funny friend...LOL

I assure you the "wobbly pops" were available for consumption all day long...as for the surprise...let me say that I paid for the Jeep way back in March, told her about it on Mother's Day, and she didn't get to see it until July 1st...I will let her chime in about surprise or not...

Not sure exactly how it;s going to go...whether this will be a single thread, or if I go with different threads for the major steps as I work through it...but will definitely keep updates coming...

I was surprised...He just handed me the jeep manual and the kids were jumping around....something I totally didn't expect. I knew he had outlayed some cash for something but I didn't know what for and he asked me not to ask what for...I honestly thought he had bought something for his own jeep. I trust him and knew I would find out eventually. What a great surprise!

And to the crew who came up for the day...thanks for all your hard work and the great company! Ya'll are welcome anytime! Jak...my kids are asking when your kids can come for another visit.
