I thought if it was "Unfit" you couldn't get a temp license to move it...

Not missing anything, a vehicle ownership is "legally" supposed to be transferred within 6 days of purchasing the vehicle...doesn't say anything about needing a safety...safety is only to get plates..."unfit" just means you need to get a regular safety done on the truck prior to getting plates, don't let anyone tell you differently, they tried to tell me if we transferred as "unfit" we would need a structural safety (as if it had been written off by an insurance company) and that was full on bullshit...

The ownership for the CJ5 currently says UNFIT because we wanted an ownership in our name and it clearly is nowhere near being on the road...

Pretty sure i tracked down the owner. The 2 numbers i found turned out to be the daughter and the father. Dude was away but back next week. I'll try to get the ownership and bill of sale signed over from him. Daughter says she "vaguely remembers some weird European looking old blue farm truck so it might be it". lol

So time to move forward. Looks like the price is right for parts. Picking up a starter for $57 with 3 year warranty. Sounds good to me. This weekend it will be getting some new digs on the other side of the barn. No more horse stalls. Lucky truck will have a nice smooth concrete floor, bright lights and i spyed some 220 cables on the wall.

Odd when I bought a 72 mustang years ago I was told in order to get temp tags I had to show proof of insurance and transfer it as UNfit. The point of the temp tag was so I could drive it to get a safety.

    Incorrect.
As unfit you DO NOT get temp tags. If you register it "unfit" to go back to "fit" and get plates/tags of any type it needs to be inspected (which means towing it to a shop as it won't have plates) and certified and then changed in the ministry computer.
I tried to avoid using one of my two available temp tags for my TJ by going "unfit" but the hassle was not worth it.

You can get plates and a temp tag without the safety.....you'd just have only 1 more temp tag available to you on that particular plate.....

So much WRONG information in this thread about plates and temps... I can't stand by and watch anymore.

A vehicle is deemed "unfit" if owner A sells to to owner B with out ever getting a safety done (example: buys a jeep for a project vehicle and never puts it on the road then sells said project vehicle before finishing or getting a safety)

Now owner B can not get a temp plate until he/she gets a safety.

You can only get a temp if the vehicle was transferred into your name as FIT (previous owner had gotten a safety) and you can only get 2 temps per year.

Yes but you can transfer a "fit" vehicle to your name as "unfit" if you like. That is an option if you don't want to use up a temp sticker.

I don't understand why anyone would want to transfer a fit vehicle into their name as unfit, you don't gain anything by doing that, you just lose options.

    Good to know

And on a good note! Some snooping around has revealed that it appears 77 was the first year for front disc brakes. I'll have to crawl under this weekend and see with my own 2 eyes but if that's the case that's a nice little surprise.

From some reading it appears that i will soon WTB a newer version ignition.........for cheap. I just don't know sweet F all about it. I'll have to do some searchy searchy for motorcraft, duraspark, HEI, TFI, WTF, TOGTFO, etc.

I would guess someone on this board probably has something laying around. I'll have to snoop out my options.

    Bring on Saturday
