    It needed a little something - fixed it

    Hey all,

    I was looking to purchase my first Harley after having rode mostly Honda's in the past and spent 6 months looking for the bike I had wanted. I had ridden a couple of Harley's in the past and had a blast on a friends Sporty however I did find it a bit on the cramped side for room.

    I found a 1998 Dyna Super Glide ( last year of the EVO engine ), with low miles, the right price and pretty much stock except for a set of Vance and Hines long shots. I managed to get it out for a few rides at the end of last year before storing it and getting some work done.

    I proceeded to have installed the following this winter:

    Andrews EV-27 cam
    Killer MC Carb
    Crane HI-4 Ignition
    Big sucker air intake
    Supertrapp Supermeg 2:1 exhaust
    SE quick install push rods
    Metal breather gear

    Below is a short video of the bike being dyno tuned after the upgrades.



    There are still a few things to work out and I'll be adjusting the jetting and back pressure a bit more. Over all I pretty pleased considering it's close to a stock twin cam in HP and torque without the payments.

    Heres a copy of the dyno sheet, as you can see in run#2 there is a rich condition at WOT around 2700 that will need to be worked out and on run#6 when we increased the flow to lean it out some it became rich in the mid. It does have a nice torque curve and once the rich condition is worked out it should improve slightly from the numbers posted.

    Welcome to the HD world, (Hundred Dollars).

    You cant beat a EVO, sometimes dialing it in can be a pain (between carb/exhaust/motor). Its always add something adjust something else.

    FYI the last evo was use in 2000.

    The Evolution engine (popularly known as Evo) is an air-cooled, 45-degree, V-twin engine manufactured since 1984 by the Harley Davidson Motor Company for the company's motorcycles. It was made in the 1,340 cc (82 cu in) displacement for Harley Davidson Big V-twins bikes, replacing the Shovelhead engine, giving way to TC88 (Twin Cam 88 Cubic Inch), in 2000 when the last EVO was placed in a production factory custom(FXR4). In 2001 it was completley replaced by the Harley Davidson Twin Cam 88.

    You know it Cheesy, the saddlebags are on the way along with a solo seat and forwards. I spent the winter working on the engine primarily.

    I've heard this, the good news is...I can work on an EVO myself and have access to the shop manual whenever I need it. I have to admit though having seen a few freinds still riding shovels they seem to be a bit better in that regard.

    I wasn't aware of that, but I was refering to the last year of the EVO engine in the Dyna models, to my knowledge before that I thought the last EVO's went in to a softail model in 1999. If the budget would have allowed I would have bought an EVO FXR instead ( best frame Harley ever made IMHO ). That just leaves me with something else to look forward to purchasing. lol

    beauty, love the dyna's. the dyna is one of the easiest to modifiy ,chassis and handling wise. have 97 dyna frame in basement, that is the next build i am doing...dirt tracker style. have inverted gixxer forks already with custom triples.

    I'm pretty sure the Evo was 80ci (1340CCs), not 82, replacing the 74ci shovelheads, (1200CCs). The twin cam 88s (1442ci) have now all been bumped up to 96ci ( about 1570ci) as of 2007. All the Harley Police models went from 88ci straight to 103ci (1688ci) in 2007 and now the 103ci is available on quite a few models including the Street Glide.

    I'm sure I'll see my nephews bike on the dyno before too long. He is already researching cams and other performance mods. I might install cams too, but I'll wait to see how his goes, lol.

    I really want to see that when it's done, I've seen some very well done dirt tracker style bikes.

    *Update*

    I wasn't able to get the Killer MC carb's air fuel mixture set correctly ( read picky sob ). I'm ditching it and just ordered a S&S Super E kit and we'll see where that leads. Other then that, I'll be swapping the stock cam gear on to the EV 27 cam to eliminate gear whine and installing some S&S tappets along with replacing the stock coil and wires If time permits it may still make it in for a port and polish.
