    Roof Rack For My XJ

    Hey Everyone.

I think I am going to attempt to make a custom roof rack/Basket for my cherokee this summer. I drew up a quick rendering of what I am going to aim for (probably minus the iron crosses haha). If anyone has any ideas that would help me make a sweet rack or if anyone has any inspiration for me please post up some pics. Thanks

I have no set dimensions yet but should have some soon.

Looks good, steel or aluminum??? That much steel's going to be a heavy rack.

I like it but I have alway wondered why XJ Drivers need roof racks. They have 3x the cargo space as any other jeep, and you barely even see a CJ/YJ/TJ with a rack.

I prefer to build it and not buy it, you see it, I probably made it.

I would love to do build it with aluminum. I have never welded aluminum before but this would be a great project to try it out. Steel would be heavy even with thin wall tube.

I would like to. To make it easier to take off if needed. I will probably end up making mounts that look like the my drawing.

This is true. I just like the look of a cherokee with a well made rack. I like the fact that its a place to mount a crap load of lights . I also plan on making a rear tire carrier that mounts in the rear hitch which will eliminate me from mounting my bike rack. The rack would solve that issue also. Throw a couple bikes up on the rack and still have a spare tire would be ideal.

The cargo space is great but I prefer to keep the spare on top and leave room for all the camping gear or the dog Sadly, no more roof rack since the boy was stolen but working on getting a new one!

cause we need the room in our cargo area for all our spare parts, so camping gear goes up on the rack.

No updates yet unfortunately its still just a drawing. I got real busy after posting this thread. Haven't been able to work on the Jeep or any of my other projects lately. Starting to slow down now so hopefully I will be able to get things started shortly.

I concur with this^ I lived out of my twodoor for days with gear on wheeling trips with a GF, and never had a problem jamming enough stuff in. A 33" tire sits flat on floor behind rear seat, Highlift, jump box, etc. all straped down. Spare parts like ujoints, axles, ect. under flip up rear seat cushion. beer cases on floor behind fronts. Everything gets out, and tossed under the xj at night to sleep inside.

If your really wheeling your xj, The roof, or anywhere higher then your ass is the last place you want to put a few extra hundred lbs. of stuff. The drip rail is also a magnet for trees/abuse. I called it "my rub rail".

Flipside. I do like the looks of a rack on the xj too. Something about it looks rite. Some suggestions I would have.

-Make it as low as possible.
-Make it full length, not one that looks like it belongs on a tj.
-Aluminum is best for a few reasons.
-Put a small air foil wing on the front.
-Strong enough to have people on it. I liked hanging out on the roof to watch events, but people look at me wierd when I kick and punch the dents out from inside.
    - If you could intergrate some driprail protection, so it can rub trees, it might be cool.

Your drawing look a little over built for steel, but aluminum might be good with a extra bars. If your going steel, think about how a shopping cart is made. Tube for structure, and small gauge solid for webbing. Just suggestions. Im sure you will like what you make.
    I miss my xj alot.

Suggestion: go as low profile as you can. Don't rely on the existing roof rack channels to mount. Use the rain gutters and get it as close to the actual roof as possible.

    I miss my xj too.

Roof racks make them look a hell of a lot less soccer mom and may get a wave or two from other jeeps.

I'd post up a pic but tapatalk says they are not valid files.
