    2006 Dodge Caravan blown engine

So my sister-in-law just called and tells me the van needs a new engine. I asked what happened and apparently the engine was making noise so their friend came over and scanned the car and came back that it needed a new AGR valve... Not sure how a quick scan code would pinpoint problem so specific but anyways. So that didn't change anything lol. Anyone know of a mechanic that would do an engine swap for decent $$$ ??
Chrysler quoted $5000 for engine and install. Engine has 98,000 km on it.

Second option: I swap the engine!!!! Anyone know how hard it is to get those engines out? I know the Jeep engines aren't bad to remove but got no clue about a van.

Probably a PIA cause its a front wheel drive, but I have never removed a FWD motor before and the hoods/engine bays on those things aren't that big.

I paid over $2,500 about a year and a half ago to replace the motor in a Ford Explorer Sport at a mechanics shop. A mechanics shop will definitly cost you less then what Chrysler is charging, although it depends on what they can get the motor for.

Well after talking to her some more, she tells me she drove it home from Toronto to Brampton and then to dealer and van had full power still. I'm wondering if that means the block is still good and just needs a new cylinder head?? A head swap would be much easier as the block could stay in.

That's what I told her. Gave her my old mechanics number to see if he could troubleshoot the problem.

Unsure of the sound. I'm hoping she gets it from the dealer tonight so I can at least listen to it. She is far from qualified to explain the sound LOL.

I watched a guy swap a motor on a windstar once...was an interesting technique...

Had the van on the hoist, setup jackstands under the subframe, unbolted the subframe, the upper strut mounts, some other small shit including wiring, exhaust, etc...then hoisted the van off the subframe...moved the complete subframe assembly out from under the hoist and did the work...

I hear ya Tom, that's why I want them to pull it from dealer so I can have a look at it. She hasn't called me so I'm assuming they didn't get it from dealer today

It's the only way you can do a windstar is out from the bottom !!!!!

Yep, most swaps for front wheel drives involve dropping the front subframe with the motor and trans attached. Then swap the motor or trans< and assemble in reverse order

Is the Chrysler quote for a brand new engine? I would assume so ... For $5k she will get a new engine, some kind of warranty on the service, and for that much money I don't think you could simply scrap it and get another. Who's to say a junk yard motor will be any better than what just broke? Compared to a lot of other dealer prices, this one doesn't seem so nuts.

She shouldn't forget the "while you're at it" stuff like water pump, timing belt, etc when pricing out the two options. Those little things can add up fast.

+1 on the second opinion before going too crazy.

The 3.8's were known for cracked/warped heads. Is it burning coolant?

If by some small chance you still have this minivan, I have a 2.8L diesel from VM Motori that was orginally in Dodge Caravan/Chrysler T&C "Voyager" for the British market. My diesel mechanic mistakingly bought it for my diesel Jeep Liberty, but it will not fit a Liberty on the Chrysler minivans.
