Not cheap but all the hard work is done and the best tire carrier hinge for heavy spares/tire carriers you can buy:

    http://www.tmrcustoms.com/store/inde...oducts_id=1967

You can somewhat duplicate this with a PA trailer spindle and hub assembly but you have a lot more work and not much money saved.

I've been using a 1.5" piece of solid bar and a couple short pieces of 2.5"x.5" wall DOM tube and made my own. Going strong for 10 years, 6 with a 35" and now 4 years with a 39.5. Click image for larger version.

something I always wondered about these swing out carriers. why are people using tapered roller bearings and not a bushing. its not like its revolving at speed. .I thought brass or even steel on steel with lots of lube. would be a little smaller package and I believe stronger. your design is what I'm thinking should be perfect.

Good point, I used a bronze bushing/dom and 1.25" pin. I also tapped 3 - 1/4" threaded holes with set screws in the sides of the dom that the bushing was pressed into to put some squeeze on the bushing and pin contact point so that the fiction could be adjusted to hold the swing in any position. Nothing like being off camber and needing to get into your tailgate and have a tire carrier that wont stay open or hits you in the back of the head. You will appreciate having a carrier that does not swing to easy when you really need it. 10 plus years with no problems on mine either. I also added a flip down 1/4" aluminum plate that attaches to the back side that makes a good table when off road.

I grease it once in a while when I pull the pin out to take it off and that's all I have done with it. Silver anti seize works best mixed with a bit of grease. It is drilled and tapped for grease nipples but I haven't bothered putting the zerks in.

The overall size of the pin is overkill and is what keeps it from getting loose and sloppy. There is some friction on it to keep it in position when needed like DVS said but it doesn't flop around going down the trail. I also support the free end when it's latched on the bumper so the pin isn't holding all the weight while locked.

I don't have a fancy aluminum fold down table on mine. I have a real Jeep CJ with a drop down tail gate.

Lol ya i won't tell you how long it took and how many times i almost gave up on it either.
I just went to TSC and picked up some draw pins they use for tractor's and trailer's ran a die over the end and just welded a nut on the bottom side of the hole.
