Are we talking about the angry sparrow thing here? I've never heard the phrase, but looked up some info. One guy described it as "the noise his dog's collar makes wgen he walks around the house". That's not my sound...
My noise would be less mechanical & more of a "whirring" sound...almost like the whine a power steering pump would make, although mine doesn't ever change like a PS pump would when you turn the wheel.
frustrated...I saw a few vids that people shot & put on YouTube, maybe that's my key? I'd bet one of you would be able to instantly ID the problem if you actually heard it?!

This may sound silly ??? If it doesnt change in sound with vehicle speed or rpm , Is your FAN MOTOR running ???? Or maybe Fuel pump really noisy !!!!!! My 2.5 used to make a whining sound ( or maybe it was me ), when under a high electrical load. I replaced the alternator with the high output NOS direct from Chrysler, and that fixed that. But like you said it doesnt change sound ??
Did you check the fork for the throwout bearing on the clutch ??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KKdqMywi-I one noise a shaft could be making ..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-Q-6BZ4F4Y angry sparrows 2:08 and after 4:00 the u-joints are nice and warm making the noise consistent ..that's angry sparrows not to be mistaken with the 4 angry squirrels under the hood of a 2.5 that another noise altogether ..

but if the noise do not change . it's one of 2 things fuel pump or blower motor both run at a consistent speed but you said you here it when you next to a wall it would be the pump ...but when you hearing this noise are you changing the speed of the jeep at all ?? also if your listening to the echo off a concrete wall by the time you hear something like a front wheel bearing noise bounce off the wall it would sound like it's from the middle of the jeep ..

Well, it's not "angry sparrows" for sure! BUT this driveshaft video just mighta narrowed my focus. Would the shaft quiet down at low speed & return when the Jeep picks up again?
BTW-thanks to everyone for your help here so far... I knew I'd get some great advise if I tapped into the JK collective mind! I'm glad this forum was recommended to me & wish I had it when I owned both YJ's. lol

I had a whine type noise and it turned out to be a wire rubbing on the driveshaft.
93 YJ - Stock 2.5L inline 4, 4" Rough Country Lift, 1.5" Shackles, 33" BFG's, SYE yet to be installed, Raptor Liner Sprayed, CB, Stereo that goes BooM, Aussie locker front, XJ solid shafts, tube fenders by Tubular Metalworx, 8500lb winch, Garvin swing away tire carrier and clearly far too much time on my hands. No roof, no doors and two screaming kids in the back.

    Sort of an update...
No noise since the LOF. Not sure if it's coincidence or if the oil change lubed something? I was down almost a litre at the time of the LOF, if that makes any difference? As mentioned, it comes & goes, but usually hasn't been quiet for this long. We'll see?
    Fingers crossed...
