    Engine Seized on 2009 Wrangle 3.8 L , 78K - options

Heading back from the cottage, 20 mins from home , and the oil light comes on , and then the engine shuts down minutes later

Get it towed to a local shop, and the engine is seized. (It did not go to a dealership, forgot we had roadside coverage)

Last oil change was around 65K

    Options ???

    - is it covered under the power train warranty 5 yrs / 100k

    - replace it another 3.8

    - replace it with something else , are there other options ?

One payment left and then we owned it ...

Thanks for the suggestions and help

Generally if the oil light comes on its too late but if you can get your hand up to shut off the key quick enough it may survive.

What are the specified oil change intervals?

13k since the last oil change? The 'CHANGE OIL' warning comes on every 4500-5000km in my 2010, though I think the Jeep reco is 10k.

I tried going that long once, and the oil was down 1L after 6k. 5W-20 flows like water. I do my own change every 5k now.

You can try your luck with the warranty. Otherwise the 5.7 hemi apparently fits the JK engine compartment. Or you could go diesel with a 4BT swap. Both are a little more pricy than replacing the minivan engine.

First thing I would do is call a dealer/Jeep regardless of what else you plan to do. If you knew you could get a freebie engine, you'd be nuts to not do so.

Any chance of negligence of any sort?

The first thing the dealer will probably do is drain the oil to see how much is left, how much sludge there is in the bottom end (now that he's seen only 2-3L drain of the 5-6 it takes to fill)... I don't now if there's any hiding that.

I don't want to slag the op, but for the 13k since the last oil change, when was the last time you checked the dipstick?

My dealer recommends changing the oil every 5000 km and that's what i have been doing since i bought her in 2009. I find that i have to add a litre between oil changes. She's not burning oil, it's just a Chrysler engine thing. Had the same with my PT Cruiser. Good luck, hope it works out for you.
Anybody else out there with a JK, you need to check your oil between oil changes.

A couple problems with this option...

    1. Doesn't meet emissions
    2. Serious lack of HP (only 120hp)
    3. Physical constraints of the engine (both tall and heavy)

Plus I believe under the emmissions guidlines for anything 2000+ you can NOT install and engine of anykind that is not equal or newer then the model year but our Resident E-test Guru would know best on this one

    okay first things first.

    1. why did you let it go 13K without an oil change? right there minimizes the dealer helping you out if the oil should have been changed every 5k or dealer/manufacturer specified.

Go to your dealer and see if they will help you and if they can then get a new 3.8L installed ( if still covered under warranty and IF dealer helps you)
The 3.8 really isn't a bad engine but as stated in the thread, if you have some money then look into the 3.6 Pentastar installed.

I'd absolutely look into the warranty first, then decide on what to do.

Aside from emissions, insurance can also be an issue if you switch engines. The diesel sounds good on paper, but I think you'll be disappointed.

13k is not that bad.... Call the OEM, you will have to Push to have them replace it. But IMHO its much cheaper than any other option.

i would have Chrysler roadside assistance tow it to dealer.
i would state i was driving home form the cottage and oil light came on.
    i pulled over.
engine quit and here we are.
Let them figure it out, that is why you have warranty.

Manual recommends changing the oil every 10k, as someone else says, my computer tells me to do it every 4-6k. I usually ignore the computer and go with the 10k interval given I use synthetic oil. All that being said, I've been finding that for the past year or so, much like everyone else here, my JK goes through oil like I drink water. I'm 6k from my last oil change and have had to add 2l already. Hate to say it, but at 13k since your last one, you probably aren't going to have any oil left in the engine and dealership won't cover it because they'll claim neglect/negligence on your part.

This revision of Enzo Ferrari's quote holds some level of truth, but trust me when I say that the HP reduction will be felt by the driver and everyone stuck behind him.
