I dig the sound too...but seriously, a gear drive will kill your bearings, lifters.... all sorts of stuff... WAAAAAAAY faster than a double roller chain. Especially when wheeling when you're on/off the throttle so quickly and repeatedly in trail situations.

In your earlier post you mentioned being cheap and easy... so saving the wear and tear of your brand new engine is cheap... and easy. But it's your ride.... you do whatever you'd like. I just know that I also wanted a gear drive because I thought they sounded bad ass, but I was talked out of it by an engine builder who had seen many gear drives lead to early engine failure.

If you want a whine - get a whistle tip

There are better gear drives than others out there that do a better job minimizing harmonic vibrations and resonance...but they still don't do it as well as the chain. And they won't be the noisy gear drives. Realistically, the gear drive has nothing on a good roller chain in terms of performance or timing accuracy. Why introduce a component that only offers downsides? Besides, the very best means of accurate timing, efficient power transmission and vibration/resonance dampening is still a belt drive. But they won't lead a long life. I'm not sure how many hours the belt is good for but not a lot. Anyway, to me, selecting a key internal engine component based on the noise it emits is silly but it's not my ride! lol

buy a set of vortec heads!big power difference. these heads flow 235 cfm at 500 valve lift on intake.
stay away from gear drives seen too many engine failures when not installed right. busted camshafts, spun bearings
just a mess. a good double roller timing chain lasts a lot longer is cheap to buy. bubb

Do vortec heads not require fuel injection?

Hmm.... And everything matches up to the block? Cooling ports, bolt holes, that sort of stuff?

If you have an 86 and down intake, there are two bolt holes that will need to be modified to fit on the later vortec heads. It's not a big deal and it's done all of the time. Vortec heads are a very popular upgrade to any OEM gen 2 SBC because they are cheap, plentiful and don't have huge chambers.
