It's a Ford starter, solenoid and ignition, though.

Anyway, judging by the description of your symtoms, it's unlikely that the solenoid is simply sticking so hitting it and expecting it to release is unlikely. I'm pretty sure it is getting energized by a back feed, somehow.

It's usually the plunger on the starter that gets sticky on those Prestolite starters where wacking them can get the to start. This doesn't have anything to do with the solenoid on the inner fender.

I needed to install a resistor in the white wire from the alternater to eleminate feed back causing the engine to remain running.
Sorry I'm still confused if it's the starter continues to crank or the engine won't shut off....

Maybe once the starter gear extends to hit the flywheel and mesh with the flywheel, it doesnt retract and the engine keeps on spinning it. Just my 2 cents.

    1985 cj 7 starter stuck!!!

After long studying, the 2 small posts on the solenoid are hooked up backwards, they come on a little rubber harness that allows the to go on one way only and after tracking them back to the ignition switch they are wired up backwards, thanks for the advice and tips
