    Heavily modified jeep insurance ontario

I'm having a hard time finding insurance for my heavily modified 1984 jeep cj. Only need liability just to drive to the trail! Does anyone know a company that will help me? Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks!

When it comes down to it, there is no single company that WILL cover you hands down no questions asked...people may post up here that they are being covered by "X" company, but then you call them and the company tells you they will not cover you...why? Who knows...it's insurance, they can do whatever they want...and when it comes down to it, the person saying they have coverage may not be giving you the entire story...they may or may not have withheld information from the insurance company, or they may or may not have been 100% honest in their description...or they might have a buddy who works there, or who knows what...

In my opinion, your best bet would be to STOP dealing direct with companies like TD, etc. and find yourself an insurance broker who will be the middle man...they do all the legwork to find you insurance...this will help you in two ways...first, they shop you around to the various companies and the companies will look at the information provided to them to determine if they will cover the risk...you don't have to call a dozen companies and get the same answer after going through the same battery of questions...second, while shopping around for you, they will find you the best possible price, and they will do this year after year when your renewal comes up...

When dealing direct with a company, you pay whatever they ask when renewal time comes up, there is no shopping around unless you do it yourself and then you need to go through the process of switching companies on your own if you feel it is worth it...brokers take care of all this crap for you...

Check out hagerty insurance, since you're an 84 you qualify as a classic, they also specialize in modified vehicles for off road use. They just quoted me $37 a month for full coverage.

^ Huh? $37/month full coverage for a modified heep? Are there any restrictions with the policy? This sounds too good to be true. I think this would be getting a lot of peoples attention. I tried to get them to quote me a couple of years ago and they flat out refused.

Same with me when I was looking at an older jeep. Their answer was they only do collectable cars and jeeps arn't collectable. Also if you mention it's a trail truck that is a non starter as they have a policy that all vehicles they cover can't be taken off road.

I had the option to put down "off road use" on the quote.

They don't seem to only do "collector cars" anymore, they also have motorcycle insurance. Seems the only restriction is that the vehicle being insure isn't your primary vehicle.

    Im with cooperators.
Heavily modified 84 Scrambler. They are fully aware of the Jeep and have pics as well.
$700 a year. I put alot of mileage (for a toy) on it in a year and I didnt want the restrictions of "classic car" insurance.

Yes, I agree that they have expanded their policy coverage far beyond just collector cars.

However, when I contacted them, they said they would not be able to provide on road insurance for an on road licenced vehicle that is used off road. Their reasoning was that off road usage added another degree of risk that they were choosing not to accept. At that time, they stated they only offer full coverage policies and the concern was that their comprehensive coverage could be used to cover damages caused from recreational off road use. This is fraudulent usage of the policy and difficult to prevent so they simply choose not to offer insurance to those vehicles.

I had stated that I did not need comprehensive insurance and that I was only after liability and theft coverage and that additional off road only liability coverage was obtained through the OF4WD policy. They were not interested in writing a policy that did not offer full coverage. They took a look at the pics I had sent and stated that it was obvious that my vehicle was extensively modified specifically for off road use. In the interest of full disclosure, I did not disagree with them.

They noted that their policy of not insuring vehicles that may be used off road was a long standing policy of theirs and a quick look on their website confirms that has not changed:

    http://www.hagerty.ca/insurance/Clas...ehicle-Qualify

    Vehicles That May Not Qualify

Because we provide low-cost, agreed-value coverage, we are not able to provide coverage for certain vehicles due to how they are used and the increased risk associated, including:
    •Daily-use vehicles
    •Camping, off-road, or utility-type vehicles
•Late model vehicles that have been highly customized for looks or performance (commonly referred to as “Tuner”)
•Vehicles that are highly customized for appearance and suspension (commonly referred to as "Lowrider")
    •Commercial-use vehicles
    •Motorcycles or scooters
•Replicas of the 1963-67 Shelby Cobra Roadster
•Vehicles that are used for racing, timed events, autocross or drivers education
•Vehicles modified with features such as a roll cage, wheelie casters, parachutes, nitrous components or modifications that permanently remove the roof and/or doors.
•Vehicles with 700 hp or greater (manufactured or modified)
•Right-hand drive vehicles newer than 25 years, specifically those imported from Japan
    •Dune Buggies
    •Motor homes or recreational vehicles

Interesting - I may have found that out farther down the line, I literally just went and grabbed an online quote based on the information I put in, and at that time I checked off the 'Towing, utility, offroad' box... and it let me continue...

So perhaps this would have changed as I moved farther through the process with them... but initially, listing that it was used for off road didn't hinder the quoting process.

^ so are you saying that you only received an online quote and don't actually have a policy/coverage through them?

Well, keep us in the loop on your progress with your quote from them.

I didn't fill out the form. I just called and subsequently communicated with a Hagerty rep. by email after that. Maybe I should have just filled out the damn form and everything would have been fine. lol

I pay $90 a month through CG&B group. 2 mil liability, fire and theft with $500 deductible. Flawless driving record.
Told them I have a 93 Jeep Wrangler and gave up no more information than what they asked for.

Is there a reason why anyone would tell the company that it's a modified vehicle?
93 YJ - Stock 2.5L inline 4, 4" Rough Country Lift, 1.5" Shackles, 33" BFG's, SYE yet to be installed, Raptor Liner Sprayed, CB, Stereo that goes BooM, Aussie locker front, XJ solid shafts, tube fenders by Tubular Metalworx, 8500lb winch, Garvin swing away tire carrier and clearly far too much time on my hands. No roof, no doors and two screaming kids in the back.

It's the whole full disclosure clause in most policies that becomes a problem if they think you intentionally withheld information from them so as to misrepresent what you are asking them to insure. Typically, it is grounds for terminating a policy.

I misinterpreted your statement in your first post to check out hagerty as you actually being covered and having a policy with them. Seemed like a pretty confident statement to me at that time. I don't see anywhere that you actually said you did not have coverage. I misinterpreted your statements, my fault.

So we are back to my first post in this thread. Even bad karma stating he is with cooperators really doesn't mean much as we have heard from others many times that cooperators has denied them coverage and would not even give a quote. It is awesome that he was able to get coverage through them and I guess others could call them as well but I wouldn't count on them being the go to company for all of us.

    Read section1.4... https://www.fsco.gov.on.ca/en/auto/a.../a-07_00-3.pdf

    As well, read section 8.

If you really want to read it all, you will understand auto insurance in the province of Ontario with every provider. OAP1 is the standard auto policy wordings.

Every company will have different guidelines to writing vehicles that are modified etc.

    Enjoy!

FYI... I called the office that Bad Karma uses, they said it is not something they normally cover, but I would need me to bring it in to get approved or denied. I have not built the jeep yet....

From all of my calling: "State Farm" and "All State" will let you have fenders (metal cloak were the ones I asked about) and 35" tires... everyone else has said no we don't insure modified vehicles.

Some of the companies who other peoples are insured with, If I say that I got there number from someone with a similar jeep, they say he might be paying but he is not insured.

Just because your are paying for insurance does not mean that the insurance company with cover you in an accident, nothing like getting suited for a million and your insurance company says "sorry your vehicle is un-insurable".

Curious, what else do you have to insure? Sometimes waiving the home/auto/motorcycle/life options in front of them is good incentive to have the underwriters make considerations (if their corporate policy allows).
