    JKU homemade front winch bumper

    Hello again,

.......same story......I'm cheap but I like stuff, so I build my own. Today's thread is about my homemade front bumper. Some of you saw the half finished version at JK101 and here is the build...

    This is my idea...

Off comes the bumper and I drilled 3 holes in the crossmember for angle brackets to the back of the winch plate for extra strength

I wanted no bolt heads on the front surface so I cut out bolt plates to weld 4 bolts to (each) as well as my 3/4 thick shackle mounts. The mounts are welded on both surfaces of the bolt plate, front and back.

Now I start adding the tops and the sides. There is also a view of the backside showing the winch plate and it's braces

Added a licence plate bracket and paint, just waiting for it to dry.

The entire thing cost approximately $120 in materials including paint. It took me about 35-40 hours of work, whenever I had the time/motivation. All work done with my PLasma cutter, stick welder, 4 1/2 angle grinder, chop saw, drill press and hand tools.

The paint is C-tire sourced "EZ-Liner" and at $10 a can I.m happy with how it went on and how good it bonds to the primer underneath. (thanks for the tip, Whiplash)

HO-LEE FAWK...YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! How did you grow grass on a vertical wall?

Oh...and the bumper looks good by the way, I love the plate mount...that always seems to be an afterthought with most bumpers.

Any interest in building a small rear bumper for the jk. I hate all the bulky ones.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody!!! I put these up to inspire people to "get at it" and give fabing a try!! It's all just a learned skill that comes with practice and believe me, I'm just an apprentice compared to some of the real fabricators on here!!

@ Ghetti......I'm currently trying to figure out a very small (more of a skid plate) bumper and then attaching a vertical tire carrier.....think the poison spyder TJ one. Until then I have taken the rear bumper off and just cruise around like that...I think it looks pretty good!

Here she is all done and on the jeep! I had an extra grab handle sitting around so I press-ganged it into duty as my cable holder!

Not a fan of your hoop/singer but the rest of it is sweet. Very similar to what I run on mine. Keeps the winch low between the frame rails.
