new to me - 2004 wj

I picked up a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition, possibly to replace my xj. It's fully loaded with Quadra Drive. What makes it special is that it has a 4.0 I6 instead of a v8.
I knew the battery was dead and something was wrong with the engine. I decided to start with the plugs:

The engine was locked up, and the alternator is seized and cracked.

    It sat for a while:

That doesn't look very good. For just quick diagnostics, clean out the intake system with a shop vac the best you can, put se oil into the cylinders and let it sit for a day or two ( PB blaster works too with 5-w30 added)
Use a socket and and breaker bar on alt to break it free and then throw a battery In and try cranking her. That would be your best bet before throwing a bunch of money at the motor Angelo.

Im understand picking up a deal, but looking at that you may want to follow these steps.
    1. lift hood
    2.remove rad cap
    3. replace jeep.
It will cost a lot less in the end,

Picked up a engine in the US. I might do the swap this weekend in my driveway. I have a cherry picker, but it's stashed away at my cousins house and impossible to get. My father in law has a crappy homemade one thats about 40 years old.
I wish I had it when I took the engine out the back of my xj:

I learned that a 700lb engine is heavier than my 135lb body. Who knew?

I know Canadian Tire has one on sale, but I really don't want to buy another engine crane.

If anyone has one they can lend me, I'll really appreciate it...
