Project "Try Again"..... My 2nd Try @ a Jeep.

After much thought a relization I decided that my XJ was not the right path for my. I went to extreme and to complicated and I now want some dumbshit simple. So I hatched out, found a new project, convinced the wife (That was the hardest part of the build!!!!) came up with the cash and now it sits. My XJ is going to have one last poser horay at Moparfest next week because m dad enters me and then it gets stripped.

First step is to Realize a Unibody ca't handle 1Tons, V8, 44" Tires, Air Ride, Dual Cases Belly Tuck, Cage etc and be streetable and confortable
2nd is to find out what I want....
So the recipe for a new project is:
1: A Frame! No XJ, no MJ, etc.
2: Jeep brand. Just partial to it.
    3: Cheap Starting platform
4: Something not too far gone so that with fingers crossed I can wheel next year.

I found this gem to me on Kijiji for asking 600.00 and I got it for 500.00
1990 YJ with 145,000kms and extremely clean for a jeep that 23yrs old (thanks Jak!).
This is just the first stage. I need to get the chassis stripped and ready for the build and all the parts off the XJ I want to reuse (Which is almost everything)

    What it will have.
    3 Link Front with D60
    4 Link Rear with 14b
    Chev 350, TH400, NP203/D300
TJ or WJ coils. (I would love to find coilovers for the front so I don't need to hack my truss off too much but that overrides Cheap which is against the wife rules)
    Propane
Hydroboost and Full Hydro Steering(on the fence with this seeing as I have a Non-Load reactive valve and legallities)
Seating for 4 so I can take my son out with me on a Saturday afternoon.

So advise, Critique, Bash, admire away when the time comes.
    Pics of what I bought.

    Complete Minus the Dash

Worst spot on the floor. They welded a patch in but not to what I want for quality and I will be boatsiding it even the rockers don't even have rust bubbles.

Most of the Frame looks like this.

But the 3 normal areas look like this. I was surprise how good the rest was when I did a screw driver test.

Hope to get underway in a week or so doing the neccessities of an offroad Jeep first and get fancy when everything is proven.

Nice to see another YJ come back to life.

And if my math is correct. That 1990 YJ would be 22/23 yrs old

Can't wait to see it come together
My latest project... Collection of Parts

Other stuff... Building a doubler, D300 Flip kit

Where are you going to put a bbq bottle and a back seat? Spare tire style?

And 3-link/ hydro assist is brain dead simple and legal.

Ya I know Chris, but I love how strong the full hydro is, and no steering geometry to track bar to contend with, zero chance for bumpsteer, I have it built and working minus my small problem of bleeding the lines.

As for BBQ tanks, I don't know yet. I didn't get a back seat so I need to find one to map that out, but that's way down the road, stripping, frame cleaning and link mounting point are first.

Why can't your boy sit in the front seat with you?
I had that same thought and on my first build, designed around a back seat and it was a mistake. First run out, he didn't like sitting in the back and my wife was not really interested in coming???

So, this time around, i said fakk it and it won't have a back seat 'cuz it'll just be him and I !!!!! This'll allow me to stuff the tank upwards and build a storage box in the back.
RIP OD, YOU'LL BE MISSED.... BUT that's OK 'cuz you've been REPLACED !!!

Wow, looks in pretty good shape for an old YJ! Can't wait to see what ya come up with Josh. You're full width, i say cut out the rear fender wells and slap in a minivan bench to fit the soon to be 3 kiddies. Would also be cool if ya lengthened the tub some if your gonna run 44's. A foot and you could jimmy rig up a LJ soft top maybe and raise the gas tank up, if not propane, like Jakflash did.

He's what one dude did. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=971026

Or if you're planning on firing out any more you could go jumpers. lol http://www.flickr.com/photos/57807315@N06/

Just some ideas. Again, excited to see what you come up with buddy. Giv'r

For now I want to keep any crazy body mods down. Just boat sides, hi-line the hood and comp cut. That way there is less to slow me down. Take care of the wheeling basics first.

I'm not a huge fan of strecthed bodies. If done right they look good, but not for me.
I'm still on the fence too about the 44's. If i can find a good deal on some 40-42's I would rather have them. That was the original plan for the xj but for what I paid for the 44's I could say no.

15's. And nobody wants them as they are hard to fit with tons.

Ya. A little premature at this point but it will be in the back of my head if a good 42 come up.

Well no pics tonight as I was too busy working. Tub is stripped of everything but the hvac box. Tub and front clip are off the frame, frame is rolled into the shop and engine and trans removed. This things is real easy to work on. I REALLY like pulling a motor with no body in the way!

Now to pull the steering box and start grinding and stripping the frame. I'm going to leave the axles under it until the last possible moment just to keep it simple to roll around.

    Tear down progress:
    Tub Off and stripped:

    Engine out:

Frame Stripped of all brackets etc:

    Rust Converting:

    OOOPS The Sawzall Slipped:

I plan on inboarding the frame and tucking it up to 2x3 tube to a 35.5" outer width. Fiqured why not. The back 8" where shot.
Standing up to knock the rust out so I can coat the inside to with a convertor and to clean up the bottom.

Doing some research into my backhalf. What do ya think, something like this with 1.75" Tubing

or something like this with 2x3 tubing

I will be running coils in the beginning unless I win the lottery.
