    Gear pattern help calling pros

Hey guys having a bitch setting up my 14 bolt

    Came with

    10 thow pinion shim
    10 thow pinion shim
    15 thow pinion shim
    20 thow pinion shim

Pinion has 30in/lb drag with new bearings and seal

Factory setup had a 20 thow shim

The drive side is staying heel top and the coast side is staying toe middle...

Currently have the smallest pinion shim in 10 thow and my backlash is at 0.006" in 4 spots around the ring gear...

Here's the drive pattern sorry for shitty pic!!

Can I remove all the shims on the pinion? Or source a 5 thow? Or run it the way it is? Looking for advice from those who have geared 14 bolts!! Maybe ctd nut? Or jim at Rockspyder? Or?????

    Thanks for looking guys!

Would you mind explaining what you mean by that? For us who are not as experienced but looking to learn?

If we were to ignore the heel contact on the drive side for a moment because of the shaved OD of the ring gear, it still looks like the coast side at the toe is too close to the toe of the tooth. The depth of contact to the root of the tooth seems a little shallow as well. But pictures don't always accurately show the tooth contact on the paste - especially when the teeth have not pushed hard enough into the paste to show the clearest contact.

It would be easier to tell with a more accurate pattern imprint with the paste. I would re-paste and put more load on the ring gear and spin the pinion again to make the teeth imprint the paste more clearly.

Yeah makes sense. problem is the master install kit I got has a minimum shim of 0.010" which is in there now.. not sure if people make 0.005" or can I try just running no shim at all??

considering its shaved so lost like 3/4" off the OD of the ring gear the pattern is pretty centered on the ring gear tooth but looks like its running heal side because its missing a bunch of material which I was ignoring at first haha

But why the coast is running so much on the toe side is bugging me haha

I can try running a new pattern with NO shim on the pinion because it has the removable pinion the shim goes between the housing and the bearing holder thing but not sure if you need at least some sort of shim in there or not as this is my first 14 bolt...

Ill get a better pic and a better wear on the paste for better idea whats going on.

Currently has a 0.010" pinion shim
backlash is 0.006" measured in 4 spots

This is with zero pinion shims I can't push the pinion in anymore!

    What ya think now ctd??

    Backlash is at 0.006"

I'm gonna toss out a guess and see if i've learned anything . In no way do i recommend using anything i say as even remotely correct lol.

I say add 5-10k to the ring gear side of the carrier n call her done

    Lol thanks dude!

Adding 5-10 thou will bring my backlash below 6 thou and I am not of a fan of really tight setups for road driving gears n oil get hot stuff wears out quicker! I would end up with about 0.003" backlash the bare min

Ya I agree it coulda possibly gone a little deeper but I'm at my max without machining the pinion housing I'll run it and try to blow it up no big deal
