Buying a 1976 CJ but VIN is registered as a 92 Wrangler

    Hello All,

I'm looking at purchasing this CJ listed below. I spoke to the owner and he has mentioned the vehicle was restored and a new fibreglass body but the previous owner didn't take the VIN# off the frame he had the MTO assign a new VIN#, so now it is listed as a 1992 Wrangler and a rebuilt on top of that. The price and jeep seems to be good but is it worth going through with the deal knowing I have to get a E-Test all the time since the MTO thinks its a 1992. I'm looking forward to your responses.

I would not want to own a 1976 CJ that is now subject to emissions testing because of a stupid mistake like that. Not worth it to me...

Particularly if it has a 1976 drive train and emissions equipment. Sounds like a conditional pass waiting to happen.

Just buy a shitty rotted $500 cj5 with a vin. And just switch the vin numbers. Then chop up the vin donor and scrap it. easy peasy .

Can't see how they'd emissions test without an OBD port ???
Are they still doing tailpipe tests?

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'm gonna pass since the whole rebuilt title and emissions will be a pain in the butt if I ever go to sell it again.

And also, they are getting rid of the conditional pass this yr so you will be sh@t out of luck.
You will now be able to transfer ownership's without an e-test, but it will have to have a full pass to get it properly plated.

Correct. April 1st is the date for this IIRC.
I would not buy a CJ that requires an e-test as a 1992, something fishy with that whole thing. Swapping out a tub should not have changed the year of the vehicle.
