Barn Find, M1-XXX of just a CJ 5?

    Soooo looky what I found.
I may purchase this to either restore it, or I may flip it. Don't ask where it is, I won't tell you. lol
From what I understand it has been sitting in a barn for 50 years. After a gentleman returned from WW2, he had this shipped back from Africa.
So What should I be looking for?
Obviously I will check and see if the engine is siezed, I will pull plugs and see if I can turn it over manually.
Anything else? How can I identify what it is?

AMC 6, side marker lights in the fender says t's no older than 72 so the WW2 story kind of goes out the window. It very well could have been shipped here from overseas though since most RHD were for the export market.

What do you think of the plate dating it as a 56?

So Timmy are you going to try and buy this gem and give it a new lease on life?
a learning experience is one of those things that says, you know that thing you just did...don't do that again.

The '56 thing doesn't make sense if it's still supposed to be original ,the key should be in the dash ,and the locking steering column didn't come for many many years after 56 ,the side markers are a 70's model thing as stated above ,I have forgotten far to much about the early cj5's ,pretty sure a 56 should have a cowl hatch that I do not see ,looks like a Delco alternator as well ,external wiper motor would be on a cj5 that old as well if I am not mistaken .Everything can be switched around and swapped ,including the tags ,I am wondering if somebody played the tag game to get it into the country , but as pictured it does appear to be a 70's model and some more research would be in order .

I would say someone swapped it as mentioned, definitely not a 56 or anywhere near that year.

Yes parts may interchange between years but it's tough to deny the AMC era wheelbase increase to allow for the straight 6, evidenced by 1) the straight six
    2) the fender length

Not much out there but found a little information for you. Built by/ in a Volkswagen plant in South Africa, 1976 to 1980, that one is a 1977 going by the 2nd digit in the VIN.
