    Xj Motor Question

    Hey guys
    question

i bought 2 jeeps last this weekend
an 85 xj wagon with a blown 2.5L
    and a 92 xj with a 4L

    are these motors interchangable
    both xj's are automatic

the reason im swapping into the 85 is because the 92 is a rust bucket... also the 92 tranny the reverse is blown in it

    any help would be appreciated
    thanx

Different tranny's as far as I know. You will need everything from the 92 and I have also heard the firewall was a little different in 85 and had to be modified to fit the 4.0. Nice grab on the 4.0 HO though. I think it will be major work to get it right but it should work. I would just get another 2.5 and get a different XJ with a blown motor to stick the 4.0 in.

I thought, and I could be wrong, that the different firewall was only in the '84 and maybe some '85s?

Not sure, I know there is a guy on JU that has an 85 he put a 4.0 in and he had pics on how he had to change a bit of the firewall.

His name is Gizmo on there. Check it out and see. I am sure it was an 85 though.

I'm no expert, but was thinking that if there was a change in the firewall, it'd have to have been in the 86 models, or later. The only other engine choice for the early (84-86) models was the 2.5 I-4, and the 2.8 V6. 87 was the first year for the 4.0; I think the radiator mounting point was changed too...

If I was a Jeep, they'd have parted me out a LONG time ago.

    Here is the site.

Check out the work he had to do to get the 4.0 in there.

It is an 85 like I thought it was. I couldn't remember when I first replied.
