    NP435 In A DD?

Well I'm getting more annoyed with my auto trans. I knew when I bought it that it was a lil bit sloppy.
I've always wanted to have a 5spd in the Heep. I want something that can live up behind a healthy V8. However an NV4500 is hard to locate and when you do locate one, it's rather pricey.
So I'm looking at the NP435, it's cheap, beef, granny low first gear and from numbers I've run should allow me to still do 100 on the highway (33s, 3.73 gears should turn about 2278RPM, very close to stock).
But, I'm worried about how the thing will shift. Are they really as bad as everyone makes them out to be?

    anyone have an NP435?

No the 435 shifts quite nice for what it is, much nicer than the T18

I had a 76 F-250 4x4 with a 435 in it. Wasnt bad really , just forget about first gear and drive her like a 3 speed standard. Low was way slow for the road , get ya half way across an intesection before it was turning 5000 rpm and ya had to shift to second lol. That was with 4.10's and 33's. Off road was great. First was a bitch to down shift into , had to double clutch it but other than that it shifted like a 1960's bus hahaha...just dont think yer gonna shift it like a race car and she will work for ya.

I agree... I'm a big fan of the NP435 in my YJ. Big, simple, strong... and actually shifts pretty nice IMO. Long throws, and very notchy, but I like the mechanical feel. For a YJ, anyway, it feels like I think a Jeep should feel.

Not sure where you can find a Dodge one... I'd go looking at the junkyards. I found a spare Ford one at one of the yards in Kingston, 2wd complete with the bellhousing for a 302/351, only missing the shifter... and it cost me $50.

With 33s and my stock gears, I should be right at stock doing 100 on the highway.
