    That looks awesome

I am in the thinking stages of this project myself... I already bought the steel. I have been going over in my head exactly how to do this.

I was unsure of the best way to make the hinge and your idea is amazing - and simple. Do you find it moves much or rattles when off road?

One thing you said - something like you placed the tire about one inch from the steel frame. I was thinking about putting the mounting plate maybe a quarter inch behind where the steel meets the tire. I was going to extend the vertical piece of steel tall enough to rest properly on the tire but not higher than the tire itself. I was thinking that this way, the tire is in contact at the top, at the bottom, where it is mounted to the wheel studs, and also along those side braces. I thought this might stop some of the wiggling it might tend to do off road. Less wiggling might be easier on the pivot and the lock.

Has anyone done it this way?

I know this is an old thread, but it is a good one...
