New HEI for CJ7 won't run

Hey, just intalled a new HEI distributor on my 83 CJ7. It stars but will only run with the key in the start position. There is power to the distributor with the key in the run position. I can't figure it out. Enyone have eny ideas, or run into this before? Thanks and CHEERS to your help!!!

Check your voltage in the run position should be like 13.7 volts or so. Some circuits are limited to 5 volts and won't be enough to run the HEI

Yup, what he said. If you tapped in to the wire that was running your ignition before it's going through a resistor and you won't be getting enough voltage. It runs in the start position because you're supplying full circuit voltage through the resistor by-pass from the solenoid. Best is to run a new heavy gauge wire from the ignition switch that has full voltage in the start and run position.

Ok might be a dumb question but do you have the start wire and run wire attached to the same terminal of the HEI. They should be! The other terminal is the tach terminal.

Well that doesn't make sense:confused: Have you tried removing all wires and then running a single wire direct from the battery to the HEI. Keep in mind you will have to disconnect the wire to get it to stop by doing this. If that works then you'll know its in the wires somewhere.
