8.25 is stronger then the dana35.
8.25 is gonna be 27 spline from mid-96 and back... 29 spline mid-96 and newer. 29 spline is debatably as strong as a dana44... but I believe it's (8.25) still a C-clip axle, so thats a downer.

If you want to lock it, either try and find a newer 29spline axle (if you have the 27spline) or just swap out the carrier and shafts for the added strength... will be handy once its locked.

Its not a bad axle really, and can handle 35's if treated properly, but 33's locked and stock everything should be quite capable for a years to come.

The downside to the 8.25 is a lack of aftermarket support.

You can get 4.88's now... so that's a mute point, it can be locked cheaply like the rest

    I ran 4.10's with 33's and wished I had 4.56's.

If the D30 pinion wasn't so fn' small with 4.88's I'd run that gear combo in a heart beat, I'm just afraid of shattering gears,

The AW4 has a deep enough overdrive to handle 4.88's and 33's
    4.10's and 33's is like 3.55's and 31's - Liveable but = the suck

I have the 29 spline C8.25 in a 97 XJ with PowerTrax locker and stock (3.55) gearing with a RockIt diff slider for armour

    - the axles have marginally smaller diameter than the D44
    - both axle shafts are the same length

I was running 33" Firestone Destination MTs for a while and thought the 4.0L and AW4 auto was enough to handle it ( although I do not drive it like I stole it ).

Because of the cost to regear + new lockers - I didn't think it was worth the price
( but do some searching to find that chart that gives RPM vs Tire size/gearing to make your own decision )

go 4.56 and don't look back.
4.10 will be to tall, you can come give mine a try if you want to see what I mean. on the highway its not bad cruising, but if you want to pass, or drive in town a lot 4.56 will be much better... I am wishing I hada gone 4.56 if that means anything.

I have 33s on my XJ with the auto and part time tranny. No regearing for me. Get better mileage than my buddies, and I can still out perform them.
If I know that I will get stuck in some mud, I put it in low and slam on it ..... seriously .... slam on it, and I have only been stuck once or twice.
Mind you, if I HAD lockers in it, the way I drive it, I would have snapped them long time ago .... hence why the winch is better for me!
Ummm ... yeah, you can't go any further! Oh really???!

Getting back too the first post and might be a stupid question... but where did you run your vin# too get axle info? My local dealer doesn't have time for people like me. But I like finding out that kind of info before buying donor jeeps

I run 4.88's in my D30D44 combo...the rear is full spool and front is lockright....and I hammer the F'n crap outa my XJ...ask around...lol...I break Ujoints first....was thinkin cromo's and superjoints this winter for the front.....but think maybe I'll just stick witht he regular 297 sized joints cause this way the they will still break before the gearing...

I've been told by everyone to not "tug/pull anyone backwards"....that is what is really hard on those little gears....

But if your only gonna run 33's.....Id say 4:56 would be just fine..I run 35's with the 4:88's and runnin 100K(which is about 85-90 real K) I'm turning about 2grand(just shy)...and 120K my speedo I'm running 2200 I think

just a question, off topic a bit, but are you taking into account that your speedo is going to be off a few km's unless you've put a new speedo gear in?
stock gears on 33's, unless your buddies are driving around with lead bricks in their rigs your milege probably dropped quite a bit... I could hardly stand my 33's on 3.55 gears. I went to 4.10's within a week of putting the 33's on.

    back on topic.

if your not going any bigger than 33's, go 4.56 and forget about it.

    Here is that chart :

    Gear Ratio Guide
This chart is based on 65 MPH and a gear ratio of 1:1, on a manual transmission in 4th gear. Please NOTE: If you have an automatic transmission your RPM will higher due to slippage in the transmission and the torque converter. With an overdrive transmission your RPM in overdrive will be 15% to 30% less than indicated.

    Yellow - more torque
Dark Blue - more gas mileage
