    My Cj7 Winter Mini Build

i've been collecting bits and pieces for my 84 cj7's winter build. so far i've picked up a 4.0 ho i6 out of an xj with 142k that i plan to take to my buddy dave jas for freshening up. i am considering a cam, something that'll give it a little more bottom end torque.
yesterday i picked up a dana 300 out of an '86 cj that came with a t-176 4 speed trans. the d300 seems to be in very good condition so i'll probably put it in as it is and maybe install a 4:1 kit in the one that's in my heep now for next winter's project.
now i'm looking for a spare t-5 five speed to freshen up and install.
in order to minimize down time i hope to have everything ready for swapping out by mid winter so that it'll be ready to take in for body and paint work in the spring.

    update:
i've got the engine stripped down and will be taking the block, crank and pistons to athenia machine for dave to check out. the bores and crank journals look good so hopefully all it needs is a deglaze and the crank polished. the head is already there so i'll be picking it up, i don't know yet what work it needed but it looked pretty good when i dropped it off. while i'm there i'll see what type of performance cam he recommends........to be continued

update: the crank shaft required .010" off of the main and rod journals. the head had some warpage and required planing but otherwise was in good shape. the #1 cylinder wall was bad, so it required .020" overbore and had the block planed. ordered new pistons, main bearings, connecting rod bearings and cam bearings. got a complete gasket set, launch kit (line lock), electric fan (replacing one of my dual fans) thermostatic switch for the fans, new clutch and throw-out bearing. looking for a cam that provides increased bottom end torque but haven't decided on which one yet.
i'm going to start putting the engine together in the next few weeks and hope to have it installed for spring.

well, i got the bored out engine block back from the machine shop today with new 0.020" over pistons, rings, main, rod and cam bearings. just have to start putting it all together and with this balmy weather it won't be so bad working in the garage. still on order is the high volume oil pump and i haven't decided yet what type of cam i'm going to go with. i'm not in a big hurry to swap it out because the heep is still up and running good so i think around the middle of april might be a good time to do the swap.

well, with the mild weather i couldn't help but get the rattle can out and do a little touch up paint work. still have to do the hood, cowl and windshield frame but it's too damp and cold out today to do it.
